  1. Quick question: What grade of oil should be used in the air filter reservoir or does it even matter? We cleaned it thoroughly last night and I want to get some oil back in it to protect it's A-1 condition. Thanks, Skippy
  2. I am looking for the part number for a 1955 Buick Special. We changed the oil on the vehicle last night. To be honest, not bad looking oil in the filter cannister as well as in the pan after 41 years.....The filter that was on the vehicle is round and encased in metal. The actual filter inside the encasing appears to be cardboard. The green cannister where the filter is held has a part number painted on the outside however, the numbers to worn to be legible. Look forward to any insights from fellow members. Thanks, Skippy
  3. I am looking for a couple of apple green - orignal colour of the engine if the price is reasonable. Whatis real cheap...? Thanks, Skippy p.s. The picture of the 56 Special was not attached....Be interested to see.
  4. I am looking for original spark plug cover panels for my 1955 Buick Special. Thanks, Skippy
  5. Firstly, I would like to thank the contributors for their support on my last two queries. As a newbee in the restoration business, the advice and comments have been appreciated. I noticed that on both sides of the engine there are two permanent mounted threaded bolts (approximately 1-1.5" in length - 4 bolts in the original engine colour - the nuts are missing). Based on my research to-date, I discovered that there were plates to cover the spark plugs as well as conceal the wiring - a cleaner look? The vehicle has the original wiring and these plates were no where to be found. Does anyone know A. where I can get these plates for a 1955 Buick Special (V8 - 264)? or B. have a workable solution to this wiring problem. The original wiring is in pretty good shape but, there are no boots covering the spark plugs. I was told that with the spark plugs being exposed, arching and other engine problems will be an everyday occurrance. I look forward to any additional feedback. Thanks, Skippy
  6. Hi Mr. Earl, Thanks for the great advice. Ironically, I dropped my tank off today at Gas Tank Renu Ltd. They specialize in gas tank restorations. Initally, they suggested sandblasting, installing a liner and possibly fibre glassing the exterior. When they saw the tank (exterior looks like new - and I want to keep it original), we agreed that they would start with a good cleaning and put a liner in the tank if needed. The only problem with this liner solution is that a drill hole is necessary to allow the excess "liner/sealer solution" to drain. I was hesitant to agree to an additional drill hole but, when I saw the other antique tanks at the shop and was shown the entire process, it made sense. Has anyone done a similar restoration? I was told today that they have a better idea of the internal rust damage following the intial cleaning. I could definitely hear metal rattling around inside. Look forward to any further thoughts on the subject. p.s. The chain is a great idea.....Less stressful on the tank than sandblasting.
  7. Good advice. Thanks. Hadn't considered the oil pan condition. It has been stored indoors so, I am hopeful that this will not be a problem we encounter. I have been documentating the process to-date and carefully placing the parts and accessories in ziplock bags. You are absolutely right about the memory thing. Skippy
  8. Thanks for the insights. We removed the gas tank and are looking at our options. To me, it does not look like the 1955 Buick Specials had painted gas tanks. Do you know if that is correct?
  9. Thanks for your reply. What do you mean about finding out about the outside? Skippy...
  10. We removed the gas tank from my 1955 Buick Special. It was stored empty but, there appears to be some loose mental that has fallen away on the inside of the tank (it appears to be more than just a float). The exterior of the tank looks excellent. I had a recommendation to have the tank fibre glassed but, my goal is to keep the vehicle as original as humanly possible. Does any have some advice for me? Thanks, Skippy
  11. I own a 1955 Buick Special that has been in storage since 1964. We have recently started the restoration. I have had a couple of views/opinions on the engine and wondered if anyone had a pre-start checklist. The car was running (56K miles) when it went into storage. Up until 6 years ago, the car was in heated storage. I want to know what to do before trying to crank the engine over to protect the engine from any possible damage given it's 41 years of sitting idle. Also, does anyone know where to source a Master Cylinder for this car. I am still sourcing locations who maybe able to rebuild the original. I was hoping to have some feedback as I am a beginner in the restoration process. We do not want to damage an engine that was working fine and has limited mileage on it. If someone could take a few minutes to write down the steps (checklist), the additional insights would be most appreciated. Thanks, Skippy
