buick had 2 trannies, one for small series buicks and one for big series.from 40 to 55 they are almost the same.also parts from 49 to 55 olds and 55 to 57 pontiac will work but the case a little different because of the open drive line.the 36 to 38 had the same gears but a floor shift.the ratios in the buick olds and pontiac are 2.39 low 1.52 second.small series are 2.66 low and 1.66 second.the big trannie is (closer ratio)and a lot stronger.also older cadillac and lasalle trennies had the same ratios as the buick.

dave,
as i recall your 34 is extremely low geared, around a 4.6 ratio.this with a 29" diameter tire gives about 1891 mph per 1000 revs.60 mph would compute to 3172 rpm.i dont know what oil you have, but 20-50 valvoline (racing)or equvilant will help reduce bearing heat.

the first is a 40 or 41 hudson then a 46 47 de soto then a 39 olds and a mid 40`s international.

the chev outsold the ford by a good margin, also they were very rugged, and babbit 6 or not they could take a beating, they ran cooler in hot weather than the ford, and easily out torqued the flat head v8 on adverse,or with a heavy load.

gary,
with 650x16 tires your rolling diameter is about 28.75".with a 4.4 ratio this would give you about 19.60 mph for every 1000 rpm.6o mph would compute to 3266 rpm.in high they will turn up to 4300 to 4400 max or 84 to 86 mph.a set of 3.9 gears will increase them to 90+.
