  1. I believe I got you all beat! Yes , Marmon was the first in America in 1906 - but the very first V-8 in the world [can't say for the rest of the Universe] was built by Clement Ader {a frenchie} for the Paris-Madrid race of 1903. shocked.gifshocked.gifshocked.gif

The very next V-8 was another race car in 1905 , the 24 litre over head valve Darracq [whatever happened to them?] and I believe Rolls-Royce in late 1905 had one too.

  3. Thanks John , and all else for your input! And yes , my wife likes looking at the cars and also riding in it - but waxing it? ..........NEVER ! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

    And are there some wives who like to wax classic cars? All I can say is "where's the nearest rent-a-wife" <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

  4. So I should torque it, run it till warm, shut off and let it cool, then re-torque to finish up? I torque it every 6 months after putting a few thousand miles on it and every time I do , I find it needs to be torqued.

  5. I have an aluminum head on my 1954 359 cu.in. engine . My question [which is not answered in the Packard shop manual] is although I know I have to torque the nuts to 65lbs each - do I do it cold and then warm up the engine and do it again? Or first warm up the engine, torque it , let it cool and then torque it again? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

    Thanks for any input!

  6. I don't believe I'll be investing in any of Mr. Howick's ideas in the near future. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Thanks for the heads up !!!!! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

P.S. all kidding aside I found this interesting. Just think of the ramifications if it was Col. Vincent instead of Mr. Howick. Probably wouldn't be air cooled! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

  7. I'll tell you right now - don't use Lares engineering. I had a rare Ross gearbox for an old Studebaker that leaked and sent it to Lares an d 6 weeks later got it back and installed it. It leaked about 50% more so I called them and they said I damaged it when I installed it. 2 years later I had my mechanic remove a "54 Packard" steering gearbox and I told him before he started to send it to anyone but "Lares" and a few days later he sent it out and 2 months later got it, installed it and guess what - it leaked twice as much. I asked him where he sent it and he showed the packing box it came in ........... you guessed it ! "Lares Engineering" He forgot that when he finally got around to taking it out of my Packard he thought I wanted it sent there. confused.gifconfused.gifconfused.gif So I was mad.gif and fit to be tied. Of course it was the same story - they said he broke the seal refitting it.

Now you think that would be the end of the story between me & Lares- but of course you'd be wrong because after that my mechanic sent it to Kanter who then sent him a replacement/rebuilt box for my car. By this time I pretty much lost my whole summer driving time in my convertible with the shipping back and forth and whatnot. So anyway open up the box and my mechanic installs it [and meanwhile guess who's paying for all this! ] so he starts the engine and it leakes all over the place . From the top and the bottom. So , intrigued now , my mechanic calls Kanter and askes them do you do your own rebuilding and they replied " no we send it out to Lares Engineering" mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif But you guessed it, right?

  8. CaptainBristol , I now nominate you to MajorBristol.....Thanks! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Now here's another movie with a Packard - "Being There" with Peter Sellers { I'd safely say his best! } near the begining it shows him dusting off and polishing a '39 or 40 black 180 in a garage with no air in the tires and obviously has not run for many years. Later on he states he's never sat in an automobile ..... ever! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> By the way, it's getting pretty bad now - when I'm watching a movie and it's usually with my wife and I see a Packard I go ' Oh look , it's a Packard ! I get a "not again!" or "will you stop- I'm trying to enjoy the movie!" or some such ditty. Anyone else have a similar situation? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
