  1. Thanks, I don't like emission control any way.
  2. Now that my fuse problem has been resolved (see '71 Cutlass fuse blowing), can someone tell me what this thing does, why I need it, and why is there a external resistor between the two connectors? I have attached a picture of it. Thanks in advance for any info.
  3. I found the problem after much trial, testing, beer, and a SWAG. The TCS Solenoid is on the same circuit. There is a resistor with bare wires coming out of the connecter (picture attached). It was touching the intake manifold. I must have moved it while putting new heater hoses on. I realy appreciate you concern and help. This is a great web site for help. I will try to buy the chassis and service manuals for future problems.
  4. This problem just happened a week ago. The turn signals and the reverse lights do not work. I disconnected the reverse wires from the safety switch and the turn wires from the connector on the streering column. The fuse still blows when the key is turned on. I have tested the wires for a ground fault, all OK. The brake lights and 4-way flashers still work after the fuse is blown (different fuses, same wires). The car has not been rewired (to my knowledge, the previous owner let it sit for 5-6 years, I've owned it since 2002 and it only has 64k on it). I pulled all the fuses and only had this one in and it still blew. I am thinking that there is something else on the circuit that is not documented in the owner's manual (SFE-20 - Turn, Backup, Cruise). There is nothing special about this car, it is a regular Cutlass 'S' Sports Coupe. I need to buy some sort of manual that can help me with problems, say a Chassis or Service manual. I have a Chilton, but it is no help with wiring. Any suggestion.
  5. Thanks for the diagram. I've been wondering how the lines hooked up. Someone connected my distributor directly to the carb. I've been fighting a hesitation from a stop, like a accelerator pump. I've re-routed the lines and it has disappeared. Mine is a 2bbl. but it hooks up simular.
  6. I keep reading about the number on the heads. I have a 71 'S' Sports Coupe with #7 heads. Whats the difference?
  7. The catalog shows the price at $200 for the set. I do not know if they have sold any. I know my car would need to be a trailer queen before I parted with that kind of money.
  8. I have a set on my '71 Cutlass 'S' Sports Coupe, but the words 'OLDSMOBILE' are near the outer ridges. The picture in Fusick's catalog says those are for 67-69. Fusick is selling a set of 4 (new) for $200. Since I see most cars with full or rally wheels, you need to find some one restoring a car back to what the sticker said came on it. They look in pretty good shape, so you can figure a price.
  9. My 71 Cutlass 'S' Sports Coupe has 63k and my 96 Olds LSS has 85k. Both are very dependable cars. I have driven the 71 to the Homecoming a couple of times.
  10. My last reply said I had a 72. Sorry, it is a 71. Russ
  11. Several years ago, I picked up a 72 Cutlass 'S' Sports Coupe (post car)with 56k on it. It needed front quarter patch panels, minor body work, and a complete paint job, as well as other things. When I test drove it, no brakes. I replaced the master and wheel cylinders, as well as the brakes & hardware. I was able to get all my parts from a local parts store. I gave $3250 for it. I ended up putting 8K into it. that is a good price for the 68. Good luck with it.
  12. I am restoring a 71 Cutlass 'S' Sport Coupe. I recently entered a local point judged Olds show and lost points in the 'engine and compartment' catagory. One of the comments was that the underside of my hood should be satin black. When I had the car repainted (I maintained the same color, Nordic Blue), the underside of the hood was repainted the same color and a new insulator was installed. Before the hood was repainted, the underside was the same color as the car (but in bad shape). Which is correct? During this restore, I have tried to keep everything original. I even went and put a new power brake booster on it even though there was nothing functional wrong with the old one (my wife said it was not shiny). I hate losing points due to a mistake on my or the judges' part.
  13. Thanks. I only saw one other at this years Homecoming. I get alot of looks at car shows and cruise-ins.
