  1. Looks like it could be the leading edge chrome trim from a 66 delta hood.
  2. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"><div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Thanks Mike, those are some great pix Art I hear what you're saying about already having 2 cars on hand, but I seem to remember someone telling me the photos for the sales brochure and press kits were taken much earlier - maybe even in the fall - and the car used was not built up for actual use. If you look close at those pix the car has a different exhaust system. The car in the press photos has Goodyear Polyglass GT H70-15 tires, track photos of the cars show them with Goodyear GT Radials. The 2 real pace cars should have some date codes on some of the components (i.e. rear end). That could at least give us an idea of when they were built. The ad for the recent auction said "one of three". That earlier car may be the one that was destroyed. </div></div> Dating publicity photo's taken of such as the Pace Car at Imdianapolis can be difficult, even by looking at the background, to get some idea, from the trees that once dotted the infield, including the Pace Car Field, which was on the North Side of the old Gasoline Alley Garage Area. The trees in the infield back then were, for the most part, oaks, and on May 1st, they are just barely starting to leaf out, sometimes not quite even that. Generally, back then, the actual Pace Car(s) would get lined up on either the front straightaway or on Pit Road, along with 33 additional "official cars", which in '74 (and I think memory is serving me correctly here) most of the official cars (those loaned to Tony Hulman Jr., the Speedway staff, and USAC officials for the month of May) were full-sized Oldsmobiles as opposed to being all Cutlasses. This presentation usually took place in the last week or so of April. I have a couple of books on the Pace Cars of The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, and they both make mention of one car for each brand of race tires to be used in a particular year, but no mention is made of any third car, for photo-ops. Also, 1974 was well before the institution of multiple Pace Cars for the Parade Laps--that didn't start until the Tony George era at Indy. I was at the Speedway for opening day, May 4, 1978. It was humid, almost rained several times, but it had been chilly enough the week previous to have slowed the leafing out of trees in a state park west of Indianapolis, where I'd spent Thursday and Friday at a business conference. So, any pics taken that day, particularly the commonly shot black & white pics so prevalent still, would have shown relatively little difference than a day in March. I saw just two Official Pace Cars that day--one in the pits, the other in the Pace Car Room underneath the Tower Terrace--no third car was in evidence at the time. Going back to the Speedway on Pole Day, a week later, still only 2 Official Pace Cars, no third car. If there was a third car, it must have been pretty well hidden. As for the tires in use then, I was under the impression all these years that Goodyear GT Radials, the tires having "outline" lettering on them, as opposed to solid white letters, made their debut with the 1978 25th Anniversary Corvette, but I could be wrong. Was there an earlier GT Radial from Goodyear? Also, in those days, Goodyear and Firestone both conducted serious promotional campaigns regarding the tires used on the Pace Car, in the event their race tires were on the pole-winning car, thus making the pace car with that brand of tires the one and only true Pace Car. The actual Pace Car has remained with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since the new Mustang convertible paced the 500 in 1964, any backup Pacer returned to the factory. Much was made, in 1973, of the Cadillac Eldorado Pace Car, regarding its having been the first Pace Car that was NOT legal for the street, having no emissions controls or catalytic converters installed on it. The official word at the time was that the actual Pace Car, of course would be donated to the Speedway Museum, but that the other one would have to be scrapped, or otherwise turned into a museum piece, as it could not legally be sold. How true that was in result, I do not know. Art </div></div>Her is a pic of the '77 pacecar delta 88, can't really tell from this pic, but I believe it used "outlined tires. Not sure of the model, but I'm pretty sure they were GoodYears. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
  3. http://www.freewebs.com/fe3xconcepts/ You guys make your own decision. It definitely isn't a photo-op mock up.
  4. rocketraider, is the e-mail you have in your listing still good? If so I will forward the mail from Angelo Valenti, c/o hurst/olds forums, with more pics of the car to you. Considering that this is a one of one car,(proto-type) maybe the decals are off from the factory. Knowing Angelo's reputation, I would believe that this is the real deal. From what I understand, this was the backup pacecar, but still an original pacecar.
  5. I'm doing this swap on an 82 delta. The buckets used on the holiday 88 option are g-body buckets and consoles. If your Delta has the 60/40 front seat, it will be easier, because the bucket tracks are a bolt in. Otherwise, you have to get the mounting pads/studs from a g-body, and weld them in place. You can also use seats from 78-80 cutlass. Good luck.
  6. Had the same problem with my 82 delta. At 1st, couldn't find it, but looking real close, found pinholes in fuel line just before the hump for rearend. good luck.
  7. I believe that chevelle, malibu or laguna has the same pillar covers. Give it a try.
  8. Saw a holiday 88 go on e-bay a while back for $750.00 or so, kind of beat. Also seen them up to $5000.00, depending on cond., options, and what the buyer is wanting to spend of course. I, myself really like those cars, sporty and big. Good luck with it,sounds nice.
  9. Thanks Jim, glad to know that I wasn't seeing things, even back then. I told somebody about this car and they said there was no such car. "Never say never."
  10. Hey guys, please don't slam me on this one, I'm mostly an olds guy but do appreciate buicks also. Anyway, I remember years ago,(late 70's),I saw an apollo that was white with what appeared to be factory decal striping that said "apollo gsx" on the trunk deck. Am I correct or was this a made up car? Maybe it was an appearance package. Anyone heard of or seen one?
  11. Have you checked e-bay? Seem to have seen a couple of 1/4s there just recently. Pretty high on bid already, but you can try.
  12. If you didn't have any cracks in the factory fiberglass, why did you have most of it replaced in the 1st place? Since you spent a "fortune" having a seemingly good hood repaired, I'd take it back to the shop or person that did it.
  13. Since the 330 and the 350 are the same block, the difference in length will be determined by the trans length. I don't know the differences, but you can do some checking around, perhaps a transmission shop, to find the dimensions.
  14. How much do boat anchors cost nowadays?
  15. Check that the wire going to hei is wire that connected to + side of original coil. sometimes it is only 9v, you need 12v to run hei. If it is not 12v, you have to find a wire that is 12v,but only when ignition is on. If that doesn't work, I suggest you go to oldspower.com, or rocketoldspower.com. There is a lot of info at either site.
  16. If you have an extra drum, reverse it and put on studs, then screw on 3-4 lugnuts so that there is slack between drums. Use reversed drum as slide hammer to pull stuck drum.
  17. Sounds like a very good price even for a "rough" car. Hang onto it and do some research on cars history.
  18. Your backup lights are activated by a switch mounted to your tranny. Check to see if linkage rod is there or not. If not, you should be able to unplug switch so that b/u lights turn off,or you can move linkage on switch so that they turn off.
  19. Saw this in Sundays Chi. Tribune "1965 Starfire convert.,Az.car, low miles extra parts. $4000.00 o.b.o.(708)423-2047" Don't ask me, I'm just passing on the info.
  20. Scooby,is this the same car you asked about at Welcome 442.com.? If so,did you find out if it is a 4spd. or not?
  21. Well,J,from other posts here about polycast wheels of the sixties,I'd say that they are fairly rare. I have seen those wheels on a couple of 88/98s inthe past. I knew they were factory wheels, but that is about all. Are you looking to sell them?
  22. Friend of mine used to have a 73 442 455 w 4 spd. No p/s or p/b, man was that a handful to drive. I wish I knew what happened to it. Probably still here in Chi. area.
  23. greetings to all! new to this forum and i'm looking for some help. i've got an 82 delta 88 that's in ok shape. i bought it for 50.00.runs great, interiors ok and body is rust free. question is,if i wanted to install buckets, console w/floor shift, are the buckets that came in the pace car replicas and holiday 88s specific to the 88 body,or did olds use cutlass buckets for this option? also how difficult is it to swap out the bench for the buckets? drill new holes in floor pan? one more question, are the consoles for cutlass and holidays the same?
