  1. Due to arranging a mansion tour for the NJ Region, i have been on their email list for a few years.  With the advent of Covid, they started presenting lectures by Zoom and continue to do so along with attendance in the audience now.  What is nice is that they post the lectures to their YouTube channel:  Newport Mansions - YouTube.  They generally have a gilded age them but cover a lot of different topics.  I thought the one below might be of interest to us.  It will be held during Hershey.  However, they will post it on their channel a little while after.  I hope you find this of interest.

The Gilded Age Lecture Series for fall starts its engines with “The Advent of the Automobile” on Thursday, October 6, at 6 p.m. EDT, live at Rosecliff and virtually via Zoom.

An amazing panel of experts will share insights into the early years of the automobile and the auto industry in America:

Howard Kroplick, historian, author, and a leading expert on the Vanderbilt Cup Races and the Long Island Motor Parkway.

    • Madelyn Rzadkowolski, Director of Curatorial Services and Curator at Meadow Brook Hall in Michigan, a National Historic Landmark home built by the widow of automotive pioneer John Dodge.

    • Robert Signom III, Curator of The Citizens’ Motorcar Company, America’s Packard Museum in Dayton, Ohio.

Advance registration is required. In-person tickets cost $15 for Preservation Society members and $20 for non-members; Zoom tickets cost $10. Go to www.newportmansions.org/learn/adult-programs for more information and ticket links.

  2. This is a picture that was probably taken in the early 40's.  Can anyone tell me what the cars are and what year(s).  I know the picture is not the best but would appreciate any guesses.  No Yugos in the picture.  Thanks for the help.1162940050_Plfdpicture.png.777cd8aa61f2f4a8348cf3166955b1c6.png

  3. I lived 10 miles from the track when growing up so we always listened to the race.  My aunt lived in Speedway and always left before the race since it was so crowded.  My dad would take me to the time trials as they were a lot cheaper and not as crowded.  The best memory I have is going to the stands and hearing the Novis going around with their different sound from the Offenhausers.  I remember when potentially one of the greatest to ever run there, Bill Vukovich, crashed and was killed.  I will record it and watch it after a car show Sunday afternoon.

  4. Marty,

You're hallucinating as usual.  I know you long for the salted streets of NJ as that will give you a chance to redo your Caddy rust from that hideous white to a more pleasing Plum Crazy Purple.

Please send money as the Doctor says I get an hours furlough tomorrow.  I need it for the non staining paints that I need for coloring books for my padded cell.

  5. Yes, I agree there were more larger carts that I remembered from previous years.  Funny, all of the people with me, including myself, kept referring to last year and then had to correct it to two years ago.  Lots of the same but also lots of changes.  One thing I and others with me missed were the Hershey chocolate tents by the Giant Arena and Hershey tent.
