Debbie,
I should be able to find out more about the Ruxton that is currently being restored. It is a phaeton. I recently saw the fenders off of it which were being repaired and another set were being fabricated at a shop I had dropped some work off at recently.
PM me.

Try Cecil Nuxoll out in Oregon. The number I have for him is (509)838-1735. He has been reproducing them for a good many years.
Good luck,

Hey Commander
I purchased my armored wiring supplies from Rhode Island Wire. Their website is riwire.com. I do not recall, but I think I did a price/availability comparison when I purchased these supplies.

I have a number of extra engine parts including crankshafts, blocks, rods, misc. castings, oil pans, etc. Parts I have are for the smaller 8 used in the Commander(250, 221), Dictator(221), and later President(250).

22tango,
The starter drives the crankshaft through a over-running clutch. This clutch assembly is keyed onto the front of the crankshaft and held in place with the special nut which has provisions for a hand crank. I generally remove the clutch, pulley, and sprocket as an assembly with a puller.
The clutch allows the starter to turn the engine over, but as it is one way (over-running), the engine cannot turn the starter.

The 8 cylinder Dictators (FC's) generally were geared numerically higher than the 8 cylinder Commanders (FD's). However, the 6 cylinder Commanders (GJ's) and 6 cylinder Dictators (GL's)were often geared numerically lower than their 8 cylinder counterparts. A common FD ratio is 4.73 versus a common GJ ratio of 3.91. What ratio is currently in your FC? A very nice and workable conversion for these cars is the use of a later model T86 overdrive transmission. Not only do you gain the overdrive (approximately 35%), but syncros as well.

There are 2 different shells, per the parts book, used on the FD cars. The later one is used on cars after car no. 8,018,577 and I do know that these cars have thermostatically controlled louvers in front of the radiator. I have not closely compared the 2 shells to see exactly what the differences are. I do own a FD with the later style shell.

I am working on a late 1931 President Roadster project car and am looking for a few parts. Hare a few items that I am either missing or would prefer to find better ones than the ones that I currently have:
1. Gas tank - 29-31 President
2. Rear splashguard (gas tank shield) - President and Commander from 29-31 are very similar, please let me know what you may have.
3. Hubcap cores - 30-31 President
4. Wheel - 1
5. Bumpers - especially rear - 31 Commander or President
6. Intake silencer - 31 President
7. Tailight - 31 Commander or President (have 1, but would like to install second one on right)
8. Radiator shell - 31 Commander or President
9. Sidemount clamps - 31 Commander or President
I would be very interested to know what other parts, literature, and accessories you may have available.
The car has been off the road since 1951, and I am looking forward to getting it back together.
Thank-you,
Joel (860) 871-6720

The 6 cylinder models (GL series) all used the wheels with the smaller hubcaps according to the 6 cylinder chassis parts book. And the parts book refers to the sidemount models as Dictator Regal models.

The Studebaker parts book calls for a copper asbestos head gasket for the aluminum head, and a steel asbestos gasket for the cast iron head. And I know that companies such as Edelbrock specify to use the gaskets with the copper sealing rings with their aluminum heads, as it will not brinnell into the aluminum like the harder steel ones will. I have not looked at the charts, though, to see what the potential for galvanic action between the various materials is, though.

Bruce,
Oil hole should face to rear of engine when installed. Later straight 8's had the oil holes on side of rod. Piston T-slot should face side of engine opposite of camshaft. Beware of diecast oil pumps used on earlier straight 8's, such as yours. Let me know what FD odds and ends you may need.

electric fuel pump

Not all electric pumps can be used in a draw through mode as required for a back up pump. So, you need to select a pump that can be drawn through for this application. One such pump that can be used is a solenoid type pump. Such as an Airtex #8011 for 6 volt applications. Or an EFP-9350-6 (same pump).
