Marc replied to a topic in Packard - Buy/Sell
I think that I have one at home, but will not return home until April. If you still have need of one at that time, e-mail me at: mwilliams6@triad.rr.com Marc -
Victor, I have loads of parts from 48-50. I have a gas pedal, windshield washer mechanism, spare tire hubcap and may have one mirror in fair condition. In order that I DO NOT make a mistake, please, if you are able, e-mail a picture of the hubcap and windshield washer. Marc mwilliams6@triad.rr.com If you know of anyone needing parts: grills, bumpers, overrides, fenders, tail lights, knobs, chrome, etc.,I need to sell it all.

I have new shoes, cylinders, master cylinder and lines on a 49 Packard. However, after bleeding the lines, I have a solid pedal BUT the car stops with the feeling of a newer car that has power brakes and has lost the power. In other words, I have to stand on the pedal to make it stop. Any input would b e preatly appreciated. Thank you, Marc :

Thank you for the information. My "gray matter" requires that I draw and digest such directions. I will do so and report the results.

Rewired my 49 Super od. It works great, BUT since it is a direct manual engagement, I must not go into reverse with the solenoid engaged. I read, in "Old Cars" that one could " circumvent that destructive potential" by adding a NC (normally closed) switch to the circuit which would cure the need to remember to switch off the od solenoid before backing up. My question: Is not the backup light switch a NC switch? I use my backup lights as extra stop lights with LED bulbs. Thus, they look stock until either brake lites or turn signals are used. I imagine the backup light switch is available? All input appreciated. Marc

Well, finished "playing" with the OD. Ploblems were incorrect wiring---by me? And the selenoid was in a "bind." I had to use a 12 volt '55 ford unit as I did not want to use my NOS 6 volt selenoid. I have a stepdown transformer; thus, I am able to run both 6 and 12 volt items as needed. Examples: the OD unit and the AC unit. Thanks for all your help. The faxed info is greatly appreciated. Marc

Thank you for the fax. I have the four wire! Hope I do not burn the car. Marc

O.K. I will do as you suggest. I read an article this week in OLD CARS WEEKLY that suggests a method of connecting overdrive via a direct wire through an inline 20 amp fuse to the solenoid. They suggest connection to the ignition switch. I think it would be safer to have a seperate off/on switch. Your view? Marc

The problem is: When electricity is applied to the unit, nothing happens other than a SEVERE off and on discharge. The free wheeling engages, but the pawl appears not to be moving. Thanks, Marc

Albert, I was unable to locate a diagram. I have a four wire unit. If you have one, please either scan and e-mail to mwilliams6@triad.rr.com or fax to my home: 336-218-0363. I will gladly reimburse for any charges/costs you incure. Thanks, Marc

Thanks Jack, but I must admit that I was unable to find the OD listed. Marc

DOES ANYONE HAVE A DIAGRAM OF THE WIRING FOR A 49 SUPER EIGHT OD UNIT? I HAVE A SHORT CIRCUIT SOMEWHERE AND NEED TO TRACK IT. THANKS, MARC

JT, Thanks for the information. If the weather is good, I must finish repairing my car trailor which was hit by a tree during the last ice storm, plus finish the rear shelf, the solenoid problem, plus whatever else comes up. Does your Packard have a nice new interior? If so, I know the car. Thanks again for your help. Marc

JT, I was unaware of the Greenville meet. Is that NC or SC? I'm slow in understanding electrical jargon. My question is: Since I have to manually turn the switch on, do I use single post, single throw switch or do I use a "rocker" switch for momentary current at the speed of 25 mph? Thanks, Marc
-
JT, Does the solenoid have a CONSTANT energy supply or just a shot to engage it. At the present time, I have to use a manual rocker switch. Marc
-
JT, I'd like to drive the 49 down and meet you when this rain stops. When you have some free time, let me know and I'll drive down. I am retired, have a small business on the side, but for the most part: "have Packard, will travel." In fact, my wife and I are going on a small tour in May in Nashville. That is the main reason I am attempting to get all the small things repaired. Marc

JT, I have a 49 super 8 sedan, an honest 60,000 mile car. I have changed the system to 12 volts, BUT HAVE A STEPDOWN TRANFORMER in order to keep the 6v dash lights as well as the overdrive unit. I can use a 56 ford solenoid with my 12v arrangement, but I would rather not. The reason that I went to 12v is that I have added AC, as my location here in NC requires it for summer comfort. In a day or so, I will do a complete check of the OD system per your suggestions. Thanks, Marc
-
JT, It does discharge when attempting to engage. I "think" it is a R-11. Thanks for any input. Marc
-
JT, I am haveing a difficult time getting my overdrive selnoid to engage. The original under dash switch was destroyed;thus, I use a manuel switch to activate rather, attempt to activate. What happens is a rapid discharge noted on the amp meter. Any ideas? thanks for your time. Marc
