  1. Mr. Earl,

Notice I didn't say 'drink expenses'. That would have put it out of reach for most people.

This is something I thought of, and trying to do on my own. For now. I come across a lot of Buicks that I think are 'no lose' situations, but do not have the money, storage, nor resources to acquire them on my own with thoughts of restoring. And I've been hearing for years that the hobby is just too expensive to get into, and I don't want to believe it. So, taking a strategy from the dog rescue services, I decided to try the Buick Rescue Service. It is my mission to save these Buicks that would normally sit in a yard, shed, warehouse, or garage forever until the new owner of the property decides to discard them. I will be the foster family for them. I want to offer these for sale at my cost, so as to keep the cost down as much as possible. It would thrill me to have someone buy their first Buick project from the Buick Rescue Service. Like any adoption agency, I plan on keeping up with the progress of each Buick adopted. I cannot dictate what happens to the Buicks that I handle after they leave my care, but I would hope the new adoptive family keeps them for a while. I am not in it for the profit. I like the 'pay it forward' concept, so if anyone else wants to participate in this mission, I would certainly welcome any help or advice. I know there are others like me out there. I've met them.

So far, it has not worked out too well. I have this 1951 Special and a 1970 Riviera that are looking for homes now. To date, I have only tried this forum, but I will start putting ads in the Buick Bugle with hopes of reaching a larger Buick audience.

As far as delivering them cross country, we might have to meet halfway. Unlike some people we know on this forum who just retired, I still have an 8-5 office job with limited vacation time, most of which is spent at the BCA Nationals and Jeff Brashares's Annual Arthritus Car Show every year. So anything I can do over a weekend I would consider.

  2. I started this 1970 Riviera last night and let it run for 15-20 minutes. You won't believe how smooth and quiet the engine is. Looks like all that work on the engine 13 years ago is still good. Whoever gets this car will not have to do anything to the engine, brakes, nor transmission. Think about how much that is worth.

  4. The shop manual mentions that the diodes of the alternator could be destroyed. I took it to NAPA and had it tested and they said it was bad, but I didn't have full confidence in their analysis. They didn't seem to know how to run the testing device. I brought it back home but haven't installed it back yet. It could be bad. But, even if it is bad, I don't think it would cause the sympthoms I am seeing. Would it?

I have the shop manual, with a wiring diagram. Would the fusible links be shown in the diagram? Do you think they would be between the alternator and the starter? Or the starter and the igition switch? I am just trying to narrow down the possibilities without having to inspect every wire.

    Thanks.

  5. I took the battery out of my 1970 Riviera to charge it up. After a full charge I put it back in but connected the terminals backwards. I didn't know it until I tried to start it. Of course, nothing happened when I turned on the ignition. Even after I fixed the connections, nothing happens. No sounds of any kind, no dash lights, no accessories, nothing. The only thing I have is headlights. The shop manual says extensive electrical system damage can happen when the connections are backwards but it doesn't tell specifics. I didn't smell any burning wires nor do I see any burnt wires.

I checked the fuse panel, only to discover two of the fuses had been replaced with copper tubes by the previous owner. I replaced those fuses. I bought a new voltage regulator, but it made no difference. The guy at NAPA said it could be the igition switch. Has anyone else been so stupid to do this? Any ideas? Where do I start looking? Any logical advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  6. Rob J, I would agree with you if it weren't for the fact that the car runs, drives, and stops. The drivetrain alone is worth what I am asking, don't you think? The bad rust is around the windshields. The rest of the body is pretty solid. I am not a body guy but I would think a good body man can fix that. New carpet, rear seats, and good skirts come with it. When I bought it I was thinking all I needed was a front windshield, front seats, and a little cleaning to get it back on the road. But if you think I am asking too much, make me an offer and let's go from there.
