I do most of the work myself, and I was an old school trained mechanic which means we did mechanical repair and diagnosing as well as doing all the things associated with a machine shop, but if I was to do everything today, I would have to have twice the square footage for all the machines to do the jobs.
Of course, it bothers me that the automotive trade has been reduced to parts replacers who don't know a boring bar from a valve refacing machine. Not only is there a problem with mechanics/technicians, but also with the machinists or lack of. We're losing two trades.
Same here in the uk nobody wants to work on old cars. modern garages just want to scan the fault unplug the faulty part and plug a new one in
they would not know what to do with my 1928 Chrysler. Same goes for machine shops if they cant do it on the cnc machine they dont want to know

In the inexperienced hands a polishing machine can be dangerous
also if the trim has patches where the anodize has worn through the polishing mop will remove more material on the worn parts
so you need to have the hard anodize removed first to enable you to polish and keep the shape of trim

when i removed the oil pan from my 72 there was a metal strap at the gearbox end of the pan
which has to be removed to take the pan of it has some sort of gasket which looks like thick felt 8 3/4 long 1 3/4 wide
this is sandwiched up between the pan and strap
does anyone know what this is for and what is the material
-
I am in the process of refitting the oil pan on my 1928 Chrysler 72 after removing sludge and cleaning strainer
I have purchased a pan gasket set from olsons which consists of two long and two short cork strips
when i removed the pan the gearbox end had a metal strap which bolts up to the pan with some form of gasket its not cork
it look like thick felt 8 3/4 long x 1 3/4 wide olsons dont list it as part of the pan gasket set
does anyone no what this is for, and what the material is
also i am going to fit the gasket without sealant as there was none on the old gasket what are your thoughts

I have decided to try to set up and use my Model 72 roadster to enter into classic speed/touring events.
Since this model came in 3rd and 4th at Le Mans in 1928 and 2nd and 3rd in class in the 1928 Mille Miglia, I have been lead to believe it would have a high likelihood of acceptance to participate in many events. The Americans at Le Mans event in Michigan at the ASF in late Sept would be the type of event I would target, just can't get it together by the end of September '23, I am afraid.
So I will use this post to chronicle my efforts and what it takes to participate, if I can even make it happen.
The largest hurdle appears to be to pass the FIA Historical Technical Passport which is a lengthy process. This, I am told, is a must for Europe.
I currently have a member of Goodwood helping with the process for Le Mans and another friend assisting with the Mille Miglia. Surprisingly, they are finding few people in Europe that are aware of the 72's history.
I also understand that some events will require a qualified/certified driver and my Goodwood friend is lining up a couple potentials who have an interest in driving a 72, in case I can't get qualified. I am checking with the various governing bodies to see if there are certain modifications, spec, etc, I need to comply with as I put the car together.
I have given myself a couple years to get this done, so if I don't die and can still drive, hopefully I can make a few events.
Any advice, comments or suggestions other than "you are out of your mind" are encouraged.
Here are the '28 Le Mans entrants
I am also looking for any information on these cars as they were prepared for Le Mans/ Mille Miglia.
Winner
4 1/2 Litre Bentley, 3583 curb weight, 130 horse power
Second
Stutz BB Blackhawk, 4478 curb weight, 115 horse power
Third and Forth
Chrysler 72 Roadster, 3004 curb weight, 85 horse power
Chryslers
Hi good luck with your project it will be will be well worth the effort I will be following your posting with great interest thanks for sharing

If you go with 1/4 tube then you will have to find reducers etc. I suggest you get contact Jay above for your fittings, however, just remember your car is RHD so the pipe you need will be longer than the one for a LHD car, so measure the length you need. You may have to buy the fittings from Jay and make up a pipe the length that you want.
HI VIV W have now managed to get two brass 7/16 unf fittings for 1/4 pipe
nothing seems the same from model to model on these pre war chryslers ???
