I researched this issue regarding 54-55-56 in order to install chrome bows/strips inside on the headliner. Used Hollanders Interchange manual 'the bible of interchange' printed on front cover. Relief on by junkyard owners for years. Body parts interchange is listed as well. Replacements for the entire top for Buick Spec & Cent are listed as all Olds from 54-56. Turns out unlike Buick, Olds created different models by stretching the length with no change in width, hence the bows I was looking for showed up in 54-56 Olds-Super 88 & 98 2dr hts. Other parts as well. Just some thoughts.

Does anyone know where to source an original or stock replica made Air Filter assembly for a 322 4 barrel in a 55/56 era buick?

I thought that the hook itself was spring loaded, but I just looked at a friend's version very briefly, so maybe what you said is correct. I'll contact @2carb40
Thanks
Wish I had caught this last week when it was 70 for a few days, it's currently 18-20 degrees for high temp here in 'Frostbite Falls', I mean 'Many-snow-duh'! MPLS,MN

Why do you want to go to the larger transmission? I have never heard of anyone breaking one of the smaller transmissions.
I have both a Special and Rodmaster ('38's) and have rebuilt both while restoring the cars..
As mentioned, the two are entirely different. The gears in the larger trans are significantly wider than in the smaller trans - as expected. The larger trans is much heavier and longer too.
Unless the engine is highly modified, I'd see no reason to go to the expense and work to change over.
Additionally, parts for the smaller trans should be cheaper (?) and more available.
I remember when having a Roadmaster floor box behind a hopped up flathear FORD V 8 was a big deal.
I have a 1940 Super with factory 4.40/1 rear ratio and 5 bolt top cover trans. It will get a better highway ratio, but RE trans differences, the 6bolt has a slightly different 1st gear ratio. I thought of swapping that in, but I acquired a 3.40/1 from a 55 Century. 4.40 gears allow you to fight for second gear by the time your in the middle of an intersection! Design in 1940 was accomadating a national average speed of approx 45mph, much different conditions from current. Just a few thoughts.

Special Super and Century were B body cars, the Roadmaster shared the bigger C body with Cadillac. So, Special Super and Century may interchange, notice I said may, the Roadmaster definitely will not.
Slightly incorrect. Spec/Cent same body & will fit. Super & Roadmaster, have wider body and won't work. Hollanders interchange manual is a good book to have. Reproductions may be available online. Saves a lot of guessing. Hope that helps!

Not taking things apart after all the effort to finally get it drivable, but THANX for responding!

The car, [1941 Century], is finally running great after frustrating fight to find out it had a bad radiator. Im trying to see if I can find out exact year as Its an RExxxxxx engine stamped down by the starter. The stamping on serial number pad was obviously done at home with hands as shakey as mine and not complete! Not ready to disassemple parts right now{ heat wave}. Want to start my shakedown cruise soon! It has insert bearing connecting rods and there is a 'boss' cast at the front driver side, which is where the 90 degree elbow connects to the water pump. The bosswas not machined, I think becuz it would work for early and later 320s, by drilling and tapping for the elbow connection on the years requiring that. Im thinking casting number as my Hollander manual shows block casting numbers by year built. Any Buick print info or other on these RE engines appreciated. Thanx in advance! My gosh! thats not how it looked b4 hitting SUBMIT!

Is the casting number on a '46-'48 320" str 8 behind the lifter/pushrod side cover or, if not, where? Not asking about engine serial number, the raised casting number on the block. THANX!

These look great in the photos! In person, not so much! Blaze white and surface very rough! I bid on eBay and got one. Wish I'd hadn't been high bidder. Just the facts! And no, I don't want to try and return it, I want to forget and try to figure out how to smooth background. Poor reproduction that unfortunately doesn't show up well in photos.

I will be researching and will post any findings, Thanx for responding!
THANX for all the replies! My ultimate and decidedly unscientific, but observable test was to put long enuff radiator hose on to divert exit water over the driver's side front fender also a hose that rose vertically on the inlet side on the passenger side to be able to replenish cooling water discharged(hopefully), by the pump, which worked to my satisfaction, as I wanted a good flushing strategy for the engine after derusting with Evapo- Rust. Two things were accomplished with one stone, as it were, I could watch not only pump out flow, but also see how clear the outflow became as I was flushing to be as sure as possible I wasn't contaminating a 'fresh' radiator repair. After assuring myself that was accomplished I hooked up the radiator and let the engine idle with 85 air temp. The temp gauge I installed held a steady 185 after approx 20-30 minutes of Idling. I'm feeling confident that at road speed it should be even better, (he said somewhat hopefully!).

Anyone know what WATER PUMP gpm is for Buick straight 8? THANX! in advance for specs not guesses.

Hope someone knows if the 'RE'(replacement engine campaign) engines were all equiped with insert rod bearings and if the stamped number was put in the same location or just depended who was working the shift and made an 'executive' decision & stamped what they figured was a good location. I found the spot where my 248 was stamped right by the starter. Haven't found it on my 320" yet.

I am very interested in the Super Sonomatic (sn 980660); does anybody know if that rare 5 band model will fit into a 1940 Buick? (The 1940 regular Sonomatic sn is 980620.)
Also, did Buick offer the Super Sonomatic in 1940 as well, or was 1941 the first year for it?
Thanks all in advance,
CD, Potomac, Md.
I don't see why not, the standard radios interchange.
