The Judging Standards" call for the frame to be painted Satin Black. The front axle, spindles, wishbone, spindle arms, tie rod, spring perch, shackles, and brake actuators are Black Semi Gloss. The brake backing plates are Gloss Black. The front spring is Satin Black. All the colors are listed in the Judging Standards, I would recommend purchasing a copy if you are painting your car. Having said this, I have painted parts with Semi Gloss and painted parts in Satin Gloss and when they are dry, I can't tell the difference. I use a PPG product called "Omni" and have had great results.

Thanks for the information. I have the judging standards book however when I went to the steering column section it just said "Black" without any further information. I also checked the Model A Restores Club website and that produced the same information with it just saying "black". Right now that is the part I'm working on. Any info on what shade that might be?

  2. I'm doing some restoration work to my 1930 Ford Model A and was wondering what is the most accurate shade of black for things like the frame, steering column, front end, etc. I understand there are many shades out there and many people with opinions but to those who have won awards (AACA or MAFCA) with their car what product did you use?

  3. My opinion is you should restore the chassis find a period correct engine and then instead of making a body just make a truck out of it. If miraculously you find a original engine or a original body then switch it over if not then you have a really cool vintage truck. In the depression era they would make trucks out of anything they could find so it would seem authentic. It would be great if someone somewhere has parts for these cars then it would be great to restore them to original.
