Bernie and Helen,
All the best holiday wishes to you and your family. Enjoy your summer. I am in Kentucky for the holidays and woke up yesterday to -5 degrees F with a wind chill of -29 degrees F. Coldest weather I have ever 3xperiencec, even with a childhood in western New York State.
Looking forward to hearing about drives in the Rapier and the Special this coming year.

Sounds like getting your trannies back, especially the modified Morris, will be a great birthday present for you.
what sort of condition is the Morris’ engine in?
-
Steve,
Best wishes and hopes for a full and speedy recovery. Just remember, there are two things you should never order from the hospital cafeteria…hamburger and meatloaf.
Cheers!

Well, in my case it was not turning on the radio, it was turning the damn thing off.
we leased a BMW 328 a few years ago (best overall car I ever drove). Turned the radio on driving home. Pulled into the garage and my wife went upstairs. Took me twenty minutes or so to figure out how to turn the Fabio off, even AFTER turning off the ignition. My beloved had quit a laugh when I explained my delay.

No car...best I ever did was a set of Goodyear Eagle tires, I forget the designation but they were the grade above the Eagle GT. Put them on my Pontiac Sunbird. The little car held the road like it was glued to it.

I hope your specialist can cure the Rapier’s issues. I know how frustrating it can be, sometimes, to get something working the way it should. We went through the process with new furnace; it took multiple repairmen to figure out and make the correct adjustments needed for optimum efficiency.
We had a break in our winter rains so I took my old MG out for a 25 mile drive through the country. It was more than a few weeks and it was a bit cranky until it warmed up. However, it did start on the first pull. Reminded me of my old Healey 100-6 which started first time, e dry time, no matter what the weather.

First car was a 1959 Healey 100-6 2 seater. Purchased for $2500 in 1974. Great old car except for the rusted frame rails on the front end. Engine and transmission were strong. Didn’t bother me about the dodgey suspension (roll bar was pretty much lacking support from the frame rails). Drove the car from Southern Indiana to North Florida and back on vacation. Electronic overdrive worked great. Then drove from Southern to Northern Indiana in mid-winter for job relocation. It was always a reliable runner when the Company car (Mercury Monarch ) would not start. Last big trip was relocation to New Orleans. Sold the AH in 1978 to pay for grad school. Miss it still but would cost another mortgage to restore.

Fear not, every project goes at its own pace….sometimes we wait…sometimes we need to keep balance in our lives. The project will wait patiently for us. Of course, some progress on the engine could improve your outlook.

Stunning seats. They will look fantastic in the Morris.
I got rid of the lawnmower about 15 years ago, after most of a lifetime spent pushing one around various gardens. Everything is now drought resistant, native plants and re y led ground cover.
-
Sounds like your outing was a nice change of pace for you and Helen. Too bad the Rapier stayed home. It needs to get out on the road to clear out the SUs
Any progress on the Morris? We are away from home until December and already starting to feel MG withdrawal symptoms

Looking forward to seeing your trimmer’s work. I need to find one in our neck of the woods to redo the interior of my wife’s Datsun 280zx.
we could certainly use some of your rain here in Northen California. We have been in “extreme” drought conditions for several years..

Those big old Bentleys are magnificent cars. A few years ag9 the California Mille stopped in our little town. I hung around the next morning as they all got started. When they fired up the Bentley, everyone paid attention. A great loud brute.

Best wishes for Helen’s speedy and complete recovery. I have several friends who have had valve replacement surgery and all are hale and hearty and loving a full life. Modern thoracic surgery is quite amazing. Again, I hope all goes well and your cooking will not be detrimental to her recovery 😉
Cheers

Bernie,
The Morris is certainly an interesting car. Some interesting engineering with the gear driven speedo.
-
Sounds like you are off to a great start. The hides sound beautiful and will look great with the bare aluminum body works.
Hope the engine sorting is little more than a tune up and maintenance issues. Surprised that you are not contemplating dropping another preselector gearbox into the Morris, just for the h3ck of it😃
please continue to keep us posted.
Cheers!

A device similar to the Iter Avto was used by Denis Jenkinson who was Stirling Moss’ navigator in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Instead of a map, there were detailed notes that Jenkison read off to Moss, regarding turns, road conditions, etc. Moss set the record for the Mille on that run.
-
The question, however, is when was the last time you and Helen took this great old car out for a ride in the country?
BTW, the black hide I am sure, will look great in the Morris. My preference would have been a medium brown, which may have provided a more “period” look, along with dark green wheels.

Perhaps you should think about your plans for the “Special” while out for a drive in the Rapier. I always find that getting my TD out for a drive on back roads a great way to mentally refresh.
-
First, the plungers are from a newer SU…they have vent holes drilled in them. The SUs in my 1950 TD do not have them. Second, it appears you are actually running on one carb, from your picture. In a dual SU setup, the line from the fuel pump comes into the lid of the rear carb’s float bowl. A line then runs from that fitting to a similar fitting on the lid of the front carb’s float bowl. That is the black hose in the picture. In fact, your carbs do not appear to be a matched set, but, rather, two identical carbs. Sorry I did not have a better photo of the setup handy.
SU carbs are actually very reliable and simple to maintain. There are a few excellent rebuilders in the MG community.

Great looking old Morris, a fun project for you. Does the windscreen fold or will you be replacing it with some Brooklands-type screens, for that “racing special” look.? Taking the wheels from red to a dark green will make a big improvement in the look.

Ah, the bonus thrill of a scavenger hunt! What major components are missing?
Any pictures, yet?

Sounds like you have the problem solved. Congrats. I hope the initial road tests were successful

Bernie,
Congrats on your new project. You, somehow, are able to find all kinds of unique and interesting cars. Looking forward to reading your further exploits.
Bravo!

An interesting post in “General Discussion” about Australian customs confiscating a stunning old Bentley being used for drug smuggling. What will be the fate of the Bentley, having had your own issues with them.
Do I really need a new project?

Happy New Year to all. Bernie, hopefully, the Rapier will be back in fine fettle before you know it. In the meantime, I hope you are able to spend quality time with “the Special” and get it road worthy, as well.
I am currently about 2,000 miles from my TD, so no roadster fun for me. Considering the rain on the west Coast of the US, it would not be leaving the garage any time soon.
