I'm rebuilding a Buick 233 straight 8 and have hit a problem. the valve lifters are seized and I need to remove the camshaft to get at them. the problem is that it doesn't want to come out. no amount of hammering and twisting makes it move more than 5 or 10mm. is there some trick to getting it out? or do I have to hit it harder and hope I don't damage it. The block is bare except for the camshaft and the lifters which are up and out of the way of the lobes on the camshaft. I'm pretty sure the drive gear for the distributer is not hitting them either.

    Has anyone had this trouble before and if so how did you fix it?
