Thanks for the tip. If I am lucky I have alredy found the lights. But there are some other parts missing as doorhandles and some good hubcaps. I have put some ads for these parts in this forum, but I am sure I must put in new ads as the restoration proceeds. Noticed that the threads at the rear hubs was replaced with a pipethread so the original hubcaps don´t fit. Must find good hubs at the rear.

  2. To Juha Katainen

Hi Neighbour or shall I say Terve! I lived in Helsinki a long time ago. I am grateful for all the information about these Stephens cars. 1924 we had about 40 Stephens cars in Sweden. You could find two of these in Norrbottenin lääni, in the northern part of Sweden. One in Luleå and the other one was trafficking the roads in Överkalix. I am the owner of the latter car.

If you have any information, let me hear from you!

  3. The Stephens at the picture is probably a 1921 or 1922. The round radiator emblem was replaced with a squerformed emblem around 1922.

The dropped front axle disappeared in 1921 and the car had a straight frontaxle until the bitter end in 1924. I think the front axle at this car still is dropped and this Stephens might be a 1921 or older

  4. To flackmaster.

I have sent the guy a request and he actually seems to have the headlights I am looking for.

The only problem I can see is the shipping. It will cost a lot and how will the headlights survive the long trip to Sweden without damage? Bought a headlight from USA earlier and the lens became cracked during the transport. I think they are throwing the parcels.

    Thanks for your help!

  5. Have you heard about Stephens?

Today it´s a forgotten car that was made by The Stephens Motorworks in Freeport, Illinois. The Stephens Motorworks did never use the assembly line and these handbuilt cars became shortlived. The Stephens car was in production from 1916 until the bitter end in 1924.

A couple of years ago I acquired this 1920 Stephens Salient Six model 86.

Today I am replacing the wooden frame work. A skilled carpenter helps me when I have messed it up.

Some souvenir hunters had in the past removed the fork mounted head lights, the doorhandles and some hubcaps.

Right now I am doing my best to find these parts. (Have found the headlights now, but I am still looking for some good hubcaps and door handles).

  6. Chuck!

I would appreciate if you do that. Finding the correct headlights will be a large step on the way.

My Stephens is a wonderful car and the only existing example in Sweden and maybe in Europe. It’s a large car with jumpseats and I think it can take 6 passengers. It appears to be mechanically complete, but it needs a total rewooding and some rust repair. My Stephens was actually driveable when I brought it home. Rewooding the body now.

Thanks for your message! No I haven´t been in touch with Lowell Stephens. I don´t have his e-mail. Maybe I can find him somewhere on this forum but i don´t know how. I am new here and I am not familiar with this site. Maybe you could mail over his e-mail to me? You can send it to my e-mail address : claes.rocklin@spray.se

I must say that you Americans are very generous. A lot of you are eager to help and I get messages almost every day. But the Stephens is a difficult car with just a few survivors. I know some Stephens owners in the USA who are supporting me with pictures and information, but they have no extra parts on the shelf.

  8. I appreciate your help. I think there are just about 30 cars left today. Just a few of them is driveable. I have managed to get in touch with a few Stephens owners in the USA. They have no spare parts on the shelf but they provide pictures and measurements when I ask them.

My Stephens was very complete when i brougt it home but somebody had snatched some hubcaps, the doorhandles and the forkmounted headlights during the time it stood abandoned in the deep woods. If you want you can reach me on my E-mail

  9. Doesn't look like you are going to get much in the way of responses. Stephens are rare enough that people are just not going to have these kind of parts on their shelve. I think your best bet is to try to round up as many owners of stephens as you can and work through them. Try to gather as much info on who the manufacturer of your parts and look for them. I suspect that your search will be long and hard as they are just not very common is the U.S. let alone Sweden.

You are quite right in your assumptions. I have been in touch with some Stephens owners in the<ST1:p USA</ST1:p. They don’t have many parts left but assists me with pictures and some measurements from their cars.<O:p</O:p

    <O:p</O:p

There were just 25000-35000 cars built during the years 1917-1924. No one knows the exact number as they think that the Stephens Motorworks in <ST1:pFreeport</ST1:p exaggerated their production.<O:p</O:p

The year 1924 we here in <ST1:pSweden</ST1:p had about 50 Stephenscars on our roads. A majority of these were used in the northern parts of <ST1:pSweden</ST1:p and I guess those cars appeared here as second hand cars.<O:p<O:pI think Stephens Motorworks bought parts like headlights, doorhandles and so on from different suppliers and some other cars must have been equipped with these lights. That increases my chances to find what I am looking for. <O:p
