  1. No worries Ben Bruce, I do appreciate the help from everyone. I have a tendency to be a smart ass my self from time to time.........
  2. Thanks Guys!! I appreciate all of your help ! Will look for a starter
  3. I mentioned maybe I was incorrect about the model because Tin Indian referenced a 6 cylinder, and this is the eight .I appreciate the help guys. For the record Ben Bruce I have been working on cars for aprox 30 years and am not familiar with this old of a car. That's why I turned to this site, comments like that could sour a person`s want to come back to this site. How do we keep people , especially todays younger people interested in these old cars if they feel they cant reach out for help because some ass will try to make them feel stupid. Maybe that's part of the reason they stick to imports, maybe its easier to get the help they need .........
  4. Also maybe I have the wrong model ? it is the straight eight engine in a 4 dr sedan
  5. Was thinking possibly running backwards because when I push the lever for the starter drive the starter drive slides to the end of the shaft it rides on. There isn't any damage on the drive gear or the flywheel. Would think I would hear some kind of grinding if it weren't engaging properly. Not sure if it suppose to be positive or negative ground, I have read both on line and the engine block has a red cable going to the block and the black goes to the starter. So????. I love working on these old cars, although it can be a learning experience at times .
  6. Never knew Oldsmobile made trucks. They were awesome looking !! Nice trucks !!
  7. Hi everyone, This is going to sound stupid, but has anyone ever had an issue with a starter going backwards ? I picked up a 38 Olds L38. I got the engine loosened up so it spins ok after a 50 year nap. When I try to start it I can hear the starter spin but it doesn't turn the engine. I removed the starter and the bendix does slide back and forth as it should. Jumped it and it does spin, I pushed the bendix out and spun it both ways. One way the bendix free spins and the other way it grabs and turns the stator. Has anyone ever encountered a starter running backwards ? If so what did you do to fix it ? I did try switching the cables around from positive ground to negative ground just to see if it made a difference and it did nothing......... Any help would sure be appreciated !! Thanks
  8. Hello, I have a 38 Olds L38 4 door sedan with the straight 8. The gentleman I bought it from stated he had the paperwork for the car, haven't received it and would like to put this car back on the road. Its been off the road since 68. I would like to know if anyone is scraping a 38 Olds sedan and would have the paperwork on it. If you do please message me . Thanks
  9. I was looking on google, doesn't surprise me the info was wrong. I`ll bet someone entered a number wrong at a dmv at some point. Thanks Guys , I appreciate the input . I feel much better knowing the vin doesn't come up as a 49...... That would be problems. Thanks again !
  10. I recently purchased a 47 Windsor club coupe, I was trying to break down the vin # and the engine #. Anyway I am confused with the vin # it states it is 70713123 and is stamped with that number between the door. As I read the info on the vin numbers that number comes up as a 49 Chrysler. Am I missing something here ? The car has clear paperwork and the last owner had and drove the car on and off for 8 years. Pretty sure what you guys are going to say but I have to check.......... Thanks guys !
  11. Thanks Guys, I appreciate the input. Im going to drive it as you suggest, I need to repair some frayed wiring I found at the starter and at the trans solenoids first ..... And away I go !! ..............Sometimes its just easier and better to just ask the people who know....
  12. Ok thanks guys I get it, do some reading. Its probably been answered so many times because a lot of people out there are just getting into these cars and don't realize these issues are common and I guess just normal for how these cars operate. Thanks for the input.
  13. I`ve done some reading, I see in and down is basically neutral. Learn something new everyday, new to the whole fluid drive thing. Thanks
  14. Hello Everyone, I purchased a 47 Chrysler Windsor Coupe, it has a six cylinder with the fluid drive trans. Its a nice car in good condition. I recently got it running as it had been sitting for a couple years. The car wont move in 1st gear but works in all other gears. To me it doesn't seem like the lever goes back as far as it should when you attempt to put it in first. Should the lever move back as far back as it does when you put the trans in third ? Sure hope theirs some fluid drive wizards out there that are familiar with this issue or can at least point me in the right direction. ,Thanks Guys , any help would be appreciated !
  15. I did a search after I posted that, I think im going to need to find a set of those !
  16. I have to say the pictures make it look much sleeker than the car is. And the skirts look awesome! Wonder if they actually put them on the cars in 38
  17. Well , not sure if the last post came through but the car is only worth so much. I was hoping to find the bare running boards , not wanting to get into a big restoration .
  18. Does anyone out there know of someone that reproduces running boards for a 38 Chrysler ? Smoothie fabricators used to but is no longer in business or at least not fabricating them any more. I`ve found one other place but really don't want to spend $725 plus shipping . Any help would be greatly appreciated !!
