I have yet to install replacements that I purchased recently from CARS. They appear brass and are non magnetic. Happy to have them, was worried they would be unavailable as Hydro-E-Lectric no longer lists them. Were they the only manufacturer?

Will post the condition of old gears when I get to it.

    HURRY!

Those look like the replacements I used,as Ed said my last tooth on originals was missing

Rest of the story: We pulled the passenger side head off yesterday; found no damage on any of the cylinder walls, no busted piston tops, no valves that look burned, but there is evidence of head gasket failure between the two cylinders that have low compression. We did a compression test before pulling the head and one cylinder had 20 psi; the other had 40; the remaining two were around 150 or so. Head gasket failure appears to be the culprit. I called the owner today and asked if the car had ever over-heated. He confirmed that it had overheated before they replaced the radiator. Sad to say, we then found a crack in the block, between one cylinder and a cylinder head bolt hole. It does not seem to go very deep, so I'm wondering if that can be repaired (stitched) or should we replace the block. I do have another 401 here.

Still don't know where the metallic clanking was coming from. All that's left is inside the torque converter or behind the torque converter. We found no loose parts nor any carbon chunks in the engine. I'm going to take the Dynaflow to a transmission shop and let them go through it, because it does leak in a lot of places and the shop that rebuilt it in 2017 (and charged the owner $3,850!!!) does not seem to have done a very good job.

The third photo shows where the crack in the block is--between cylinder wall at bottom of photo and the head bolt hole in front of my finger.

Aaah, thanks Ray. Your setup is much better than de-commissioning original HVAC controls and punching-in a hole for some generic panel. My project is FrankenRiv enough!

Would you have more info on those sliders? Part numbers?

I  favour oldair.com. They are always helpful and supply original replacement vacuum actuators (half plastic I know), complete cable set for 1963 Buicks, STV conversions and colour striped vacuum hoses. The few times I consulted with Vintage Air, they never offered slider controls. Just rip and tear out the OE system and install theirs. It is good to procrastinate. A better solution always comes later.

I used the sliders from vintage air (there tech department was very helpful)on my 63.The kit they sent me is 1961-62 Chevrolet impala control panel conversion kit 471062.Follow Ray's instructions,he was very helpful with my instulation.

I have my '63's "switch pitch linkage" disconnected from the throttle. I do not think it is a good idea to activate that switch pitch on the torque converter when you are at essentially wide-open throttle, with all of the engine's torque going through it. I think you are just asking for transmission trouble if you do that to a 60 year old machine.

    YMMV.

I feel the same way Jim,all I do is cruise and dont really travel that much on two lane roads. If something would happen to the trans I thought where would I get it fixed. The old (if it's not broke).

  5. Ron something to think about, when I ordered my gen 4 system directly from vintage air it took 15 weeks to get it (this year). They sent me there catalog that has all the parts you will need to complete your project. With your one time shipping dellema,i can problobly let you know what you'll need since you'll have to use a generic gen 4.They dont make a plug and play system for our cars, mines a 63.

Still working on the little CB 400-4 that we got at an auction. In the final stages now as my wife and I are learning how to make a little custom "solo" seat. The pic of it in silver was the day I bought it in June, the red is a couple of days ago. Hey, we're slow, lol. We are also refinishing a huge dining room set, and here is Karen scrapping off the old clear.

If it's not poly finish try oven cleaner

  7. I believe Jim is right.Saw him at the Branson meet,my car was running warm on the way down and he suggested my radiator was problobly the reason. On the way home it ran 230 degrees at 50 mph.Got home and had the radiator recored,it now runs about 195.
