  1. A while back a friend who was in an advanced age had passed away.  His beautiful cars, which he restored and owned for many decades were sold off by his family members.  A year later I saw his '61 Plymouth convertible being auctioned on eBay.  The eBay listing made no mention of my friend or the history of the car.  I thought it was very sad how this car, it's story and how the car was so important in my friends life, is now all lost to history.  With that in mind, I made this little video on my Corvair Greenbrier.  I did this to simply share the story of my van and to memorialize my journey with it.  I also invite others to share their car stories so its history and memories can continue long after the car leaves your possession.

Interesting effort on Chrysler's part to build a limo out of a K car. They had the delusion at the time that the future was small 4 cylinder cars.

The interesting thing is the way they put it together. They combined the back half of the 2 door coupe and the front half of a 4 door sedan. All they had to make new was the back doors. Plus the rocker panels, floor, and roof which were simple. So it did not cost a whole lot to make which was lucky as they only sold a few hundred per year. I believe they made them for 2 years then gave up.

I believe Packard did the same trick of combining a 2 door coupe and 4 door sedan body to make a limousine in their 1951 to 54 models. Which may be why they did not offer a limo after 54 as they dropped their club coupe.

Man, great information on limo's.  Somehow I struggling with myself on reading up on 1980's Chryslers.  You know, it's not the most interesting stuff.

And this is what you replaced that great DeSoto with???:P Gotta love it!

Hahaha.  You're great!  Yea, this is the replacement for the Desoto.  Not quite in the same league but the fun factor is huge.  My 12 year old daughter said in jest several weeks ago how cool it would be to go to school in a limo.  Well, this isn't really what she had in mind but it's exactly what I'll be picking her up in, once the doodads I bought go on.   It's gonna be great although afterwards she may not talk to me for a week.   -Chris

On a properly running Corvair, you set them once and forget them. They are hydraulic lifters, just like SBC. They get adjusted when changing push rod tube o-rings, or the oil gets dirty on high mileage engines and a lifter can stick, so I adjusted many to run as solids back in the day of daily drivers owned by cheap people.

At least you didn't ask if they get adjusted hot or cold. That gets a hot discussion going on Corvair forums.:D

Typical maintenance items of the 60s. Tune up every 12 K or so, points/condenser/rotor. Oil changes every 3 K miles or so. Replace the 50 year old xxxx that finally failed after xxx miles.  Change the fan belt regularly if manual transmission, rarely on Powerglide models, assuming you drive it spirtedly!;)

These Corvair FCs* autocross great! 4 wheel independent suspension. Ride is waay better than a "Chevy van".

*Forward Control, came in Greenbrier shown, panel van Corvair 95, Loadside the pick up, and Rampside, the pick up with the side loading ramp. Excellent for motorcycle hauling.

Hey Frank, great information.  Thanks for sharing so much.  -Chris

Sounds like it's running well. Have you done any major engine work? What is the maintenance like? Are regular valve adjustments required?

Mike, yea, she's running really well.  The stainless band that holds the muffler down recently broke off so the muffler rattles around but otherwise, she's really a super dependable and reliable ride.  When I first got the van 8 years ago I went through the ignition system, did everything in the brake system last year but otherwise, a perfect and carefree vehicle during those 10K miles.  It really surprises me.

Are you becoming a dad and the Desoto now has to make room for mom's new minivan?

    Craig

Hey Craig, naw, selling the Desoto wasn't for something noble like a family minivan.  Although I certainly need one with four kiddos.  You see, I've got this bucket-list of cars I've always wanted and I made a commitment to myself to only keep a play car for one year, fix it up a bit, enjoy it, and move on to the next car on the list.   So my time with the Desoto has ended and now someone else gets to enjoy her now.    So now, I'm starting a search for another car and I'm casting a wide net as I like so many different things.    -Chris

If there is a year/make/model you are looking for. Let me know and I will keep an eye out for you here.

Man, you're great and I appreciate the offer.  I've got a bunch of cars I'm interested and they're so varied it's crazy.  Once I get my search refined a little better I would certainly appreciate some help.

Chris,  To bad you din;t make the AACA Tours.   Seeing America on two lane roads with other cars of similar vintage is a real treat (Also a good film opportunity)  thanks for sharing your experiences)

    Paul

Paul, this is the first I'm hearing about an AACA Tour.  Sounds pretty fun and I think you're right about an opportunity for more filming.  Got a link or more info on the tour?  I've got a Corvair Greenbrier that would be a great on a road trip!

  9. Hey Mike, thanks.  You know, brotha, you can hate the game but don't hate the player!  Ha.  Thanks for watching and, you're very kind!  I used to have a 1958 Dodge Coronet that I restored over 15 years.  I loved that car but also realized that there were so many other cars and trucks that I wanted. All my car money was wrapped up in the Dodge. So when I sold it I made a commitment to myself to start going through my car bucket-list and only keep cars for a year. This led me to some pretty awesome cars, trucks and vans, but only the past year did I start recording my car experiences.  As for the next car, I've got my eyes on a few different ones but nothing solid yet.  I did buy some Crown Vic cop cars today that I'll probably make a video of next week.  However, those cars don't really fit in here.  I do however have a video planned with my Corvair Greenbrier that should be fun.  Kinda like the old "if the van's a rockin" thing.  Stay tuned and thanks again.  -Chris

That was another great and fun video. With your looks and smooth pick up lines I think the only problem was that the car was too flashy. Next time try a rat rod and wait till they are leaving the bingo hall.

Hey, thanks.  You must be right about the car being too cool.  It certainly wasn't my smoothness that scared them off, hah!

The '57 Skyliner is pretty handy at picking up men! ?

    Funny video. Loved it.

A pretty lady in a '57 Ford is hard to resist.  The only thing that could make it better would be a Dunkin Donuts coffee roll donut!

Sorry Buddy but it ain't the car that's not gettin' the Babes .... :)

    Jim

Jim thanks.  So if it's not the car that's keepin the ladies away, I can't imagine what it could be?  Certainly not my smooth pick-up lines and easy-on-the -eyes good looks.

OMG what a kyoot video....... :P

We need a WHOLE lot more of this kind of thing now days....... :D

I'm glad you liked the video.  I wasn't sure how it would come out and if the jokiness nature of it would be apparent.  I see those women every Friday night when I volunteer there so I was thrilled when they were cool with me doing this video with them.

    Excellent fun video!

    Thanks for posting!

I worked on a 61 DeSoto last year!

Thanks.  I had a lot of fun doing this video too.  You know, since you got to work on a '61 Desoto you're now part of a very elite club.  Not many of those cars are around and it seems they turn up in Europe more than in the USA.

You are doing your part for humanity for certain.  I'm sure each of those ladies talked about this back home.

Thanks.  I filmed this video last Friday and got to share it with those women today and each really seemed to enjoy it.  They all genuinely seemed to enjoy the car too and I was happy to share it with them.  Thanks again.  -Chris

Great videos! I would love to see music credits! You have great taste in what you choose.

Thanks for checking out my video on the Desoto.  As for the music, the scene in the middle of the video with the walkaround of the car is  the editing software I use, iMovie.  The track title is called Daydream.  The track at the end of the video with the driving scenes is called Hold On A Second and I got that from the free music library on Youtube.  Thanks again.  Chris

    Again, very well done video!

I hope you have also been able to find some of the scarce 1961 Desoto dealer items and magazine advertising.

    Craig

Craig, thanks for the comment and for checking out my video.  I really do appreciate it.  I didn't think of finding dealer items and advert.  I think I'll start my search at Hershey.  No doubt something will turn up there!  -Chris

Chris that was another well done and interesting video.  I liked the drive you took with it and the jazz music was great!

Woody, thanks so much.  I enjoy talking about this car and sharing it with others.  I've got another video in the works that has a layer of satire and I hope it comes out well and not hokey.    We'll see.  Anyways, thanks again.

    Hey Chris

EXCELLENT, great follow up. Our family had a 1960 Plymouth when new and that too had the push button transmission.

It was a great feature and never gave any trouble , a favorite Uncle of mine had a 1962 Dodge when new, and that had the same push button feature.

He was my favorite uncle because he was the only one in the family that didn't think I was nuts because I liked old cars !

Thanks again for making the effort to do and share this with all of us.

    Walt

Walt, thanks for the comment.  You're too kind.  It's interesting about the '60 Plymouth and '62 Dodge.  They're pretty wacky cars and I've always wondered about who the person was that bought these new.  I'd love to meet up with you at Hershey this fall.  I'm trying to rearrange my schedule so I can get there for a day.  There's a bunch of car video stuff I'd love to speak with you about

  15. Hey John, thanks so much.  You know, I see in your signature line that you have  a '61 Lincoln.  Well, I referenced the '61 Lincoln in Episode #1 of this Desoto video as an example of how dated the '61 Desoto was when compared to how automotive styling changed in the '61 model year.

  16. About a week ago I posted a video on my 1961 Desoto.  Since that video I received a lot of feedback, both on this forum and elsewhere from folks saying how there are so many other interesting and unusual features of this car that I left out.  Because of that, I felt obliged to create a second episode expounding these points.

  17. Hey Craig, thanks!  I enjoyed making it and especially educating folks on this car and the whole Forwardlook era.  Thanks too for sharing how Desoto lived on outside the USA and I too wish I had that super cool dash clock.  Since this video was posted a few days ago I received a bunch of feedback on how I missed a few notable things about the car.  So... I've got a follow-up video in the works now and expect to have it uploaded on Friday.  Look forward to it!

That was a great video, that 7+ minutes seemed too short. I've watched your videos in the past and think you should post more regularly.

Thanks for the comment and your thoughts about more videos.  I plan on creating a bunch more over the next few weeks, before the weather gets too cold here in Delaware.  It's surprising however the number of hours it takes and level of effort needed to make a simple little 7 minute video.  Regardless, look forward to a few more in the coming days and weeks.

Well done, I got sea sick watching that poor old Mercury. That Cadillac took a beating in that test.

I wonder if those GM cars were put on a used car lot right after that Promo video was made.  Imagine seeing that brand new Cadillac for sale with a mangled rear door and trunk lid, shocks ripped out and a destroyed front suspension and wondering what the hell happened.
