1935 Chrysler rear motor mounts

Can anyone tell me what purpose the center piece of this motor mount setup was for? It connects the two side motor mounts together and to the crossmember. There seems to be a piece missing that would have filled the empty space. The rear mounts for 1936 and 37 are similar but do not have this center bracket. They do have holes in the crossmember as mine does but they do not have the ears on the right and left mounts to attach a center bracket Thanks, Terry
