From what I can tell it is hallow in the back where the two storage compartments are but is there any wireing, tubing, etc. I should be aware of before I start drilling and running wire?

Looks to me like that area between the "compartments" would be a much easier way to access the fuel pump. Of course you would have to remove the tank to cut the hole in the floor.

Actually, in the future I am planning on doing somthing somewhat similar to what you did with a computer except mine will involve a few more amenities for the passenger (or for me when I feel that i'm not distracted from driving enough ) and was hoping to save some work by using the storage compartments but will change my "blue prints" a little now.

Happy 3,000 Phil!!!!

anyway's, was thinking about GPS,Internet, and breaking into the car speakers somehow since I don't have a MP3 player port on my stereo, but also PS2 (was thinking about waiting for PS3 but the controllers are to goofy for me),

T.V., and DVD which would come from the PS2 so I wouldn't need to worry about a high cost computer. drew out some plans if anyone would like to see?

You gonna be at the Homecoming? You can see my setup

Which reminds me, that I really don't have any good pix of the system to brag about

here's the math:

{Reatta homecoming (sept 15,16,17) + my b-day (dec. 1 1990)} + {parents that have O.T. coming out of their ears next month due to soft economy + not a real enough looking blow up doll to put next to me in the car} ==

If I could grow wings to fly to lansing even for a day I would

Monsieur philip, are you challenging me to a duel? lol J/K ,

I don't think my setup would "outdo" yours because my plans need to be removable so it can't look as good as yours. But to make you happy I'll put a big decal in my window saying "brought to you by f14crazy" now would you like white or black decals? .........

attached is my sketch, keep in mind I'm no artist

forgot to add: the red is wire, the dotted red is hidden wire. the keyboard will be held where it shows but will have to sit on the users lap, and the mouse will have velcro

What the...what a neat, informative diagram you got there son

armrest1.jpg

Why use a mouse, when there's better alternatives?

I haven't got around to it yet (was working on the system when my dash problems came up). I've got a USB hub in the center console, where the trackpad plugs in. A 20 foot or so USB cable (very cheap on ebay) goes to the trunk to the Compaq. I haven't got it yet, but I'm going to get a flexible mount like what they use for windshield-iPod holders; this will be attached to the center console and have a small keyboard on it. There's an 8'' wide wide on ebay. This will be just high enough to be about the same level as the armrest is, so when driving, you can switch between the trackpad and use the keyboard one handed. The flex mount will allow the passenger easy access to it.

My LCD is 6.5'' and is where the tape deck would normally be (with an '89). This spot work sout pretty well. I had a gaping hole there anyway. It's a little small at times but I have magnification on, so part of the top of the screen magnifies on where the arrow/cursor is, so it's good. It's just fine when using Streets and Trips with the GPS. My GPS reciever sits under the rear window.

1200 watt inverter powers everything.

The LCD uses RCA but my Compaq only has VGA, so I have to use a VGA to RCA converter. I know some quality is lost here, but not a big deal. These aren't that expensive used on ebay. Normally used to give laptop presentations on a TV.

If you want some more photos, speak up son

You gonna have like a Pioneer head unit with retracting LCD, or something else? I have an AVH-P6400 in my Explorer, which is a good unit. I've got pix of that somewhere too. Would work out well with you since you have a '90 anyway. I'm also thinking of sunvisor LCDs, which can get up to 8'', and it wouldn't really be out of the way to look at to have a quick look at the GPS.

I'm a young computer tech, son. I've dreamed up a lot of sweet systems in my head. But you know what?

I'll have to photoshop your diagram later lol. I dont know about how hallow the storage area is but i know you may be able to remove it and drill the holes so you wont puncture the gas tank and run the wires underneath but you would still possibly need to remove the seats to run the wires under the carpet on the floor. I ran my subwoofer RCA's and my neon lighting/accessory switch wires to the front of the car under the storage compartment and under the shifter and since i removed the old radio unit, that gave me a small amout of storage space.
