Windshield Crankout Mechanism for 1936 MOPAR

The Windshield Crankout mechanism has broken on my 1936 Dodge. The crank had been really stiff to turn. Finally it made a "snap" noise and now turns freely without moving the windshield at all. The windshield is partially open. My questions are: (1) Does the whole mechanism have to be replaced? Or could it be repaired? (2) How difficult is it to remove the mechanism? And how is it done? (3) Is this mechanism the same for all 36 MOPARs?

Thanks,

Robert Perry

There's a gear in there you probably either stripped a tooth or the shaft broke inside. It could have broken something on the stainless steel strap that rolls out. Did you try pushing gently back on it to see if it would catch again? On my 36 dodge you just have to take the screws out under the top piece on the dash to get at the mechanism. It's bolted in with 2 bolts and held to the windshield with 2 screws. Usually what breaks is the stainless steel part from excess wind pressure buckling it when you have it open a long way. My truck has a handle that is held on with a set screw. The cars usually have a fold up handle with a screw in the center you can see when the handle is opened. remove the screw and pull the handle off the spline to remove the handle. The mechanism is the same only the handles are different. If you need more help email me.If you can find one with a broken strap you could drill the rivet out of yours if your strap is good and use the other mechananism with your strap. Just re-rivet .
