'31 Broken Valve Springs (revisited)

Recommended Posts

Since I am back working on the engine I like to revisit this dilemma with my broken valve springs. As some of you are aware the springs are not an easy task to put together. Well now that I have disassembled, reassembled etc. the end caps have become useless for some of the springs. Original '31 Broken Valve Spring Post

Is there a place I can get new or used ones?

Does anyone have any ideas on fabrication of caps?

Would anyone have a loose Valve guide they can take a picture of it for me? I like to see what they look like just in case I needed to do them also.

Thanks

Good question. I've never done valve guides in a L-head engine. I'm sure it would take a good press with special adapters to get the new ones in, but I'm not sure how you get the old ones out ??? There's probably some special tool needed, to press them thru bottom side? That's one thing, even I wouldn't try to do. Since I've never considered doing it myself, I've never checked on it in the service manuals.

You need to find someone experienced in that type job, if you have to replace them. Of the 5 L-head engines I've overhauled none of the valve-guides needed replacing. I did have one with badly worn tappet guides tho (the '37). Luckily I had 2 engines to make one good one, instead of trying to repair it. (I used block from one engine and crankcase from other engine)

Measureing is good, but it's always best to check the clearance by putting the valves in the guide and wiggle it. If you can feel it wiggle (with oil on valve stem), then either the valve or guide has a problem. Even new valves or guides can be made wrong, so always do a 'Final Fit Test', as I call it. Cause, If it Don't Fit, I have a Fit!
