Bob Kinker
Check the number on the engine. On the driver's side near the front of the engine, is a machined pad with letters & numbers stamped in it. Most of your older cars were identified by the engine number. They were also registered by that number. As another board user has pointed out, they didn't have "Vin Numbers" in 53. Look for & clean off that area, and post your findings. We will be able to tell if your engine is of the correct year & manufacture for your car. If you look at the plate it will also have "Vehicle No", or words to that effect.Although the engine number was used for car identification in many jurisdictions at one time, I do not know of any that accept it now. Not sure what the other numbers mean. Would have to see how they are attached to the car on stamped on the plate. There really is nothing confusing about your car. As I stated in another post, the serial numbers on pre-1958 Mopar vehicles can not be decoded. They are a serial number, pure and simple. Thus, when you resgister your car, the VIN is "71017014".If you check any Chrysler parts book or service manual from that era, or any issue of NADA used car guide or Branham's, they will all tell you the car' serial number is stamped on a plate attached to the driver's door hinge post.BillVancouver, BC
