crazycars
Anyone out there know of another 6 cyl Chrysler product engine that will fit a 31 Desoto without modifications? How about a vintage Chrysler product engine that will fit with slight modifications?
crazycars
Can now answer my own question! Later flathead 6 Chrysler product motors will not fit the bell housing of the 31 Desoto, the bolt pattern is much different. Using the later bell housing is a problem because the original bell stretches between both frame members and also houses the master cylinder. The original trans won't fit the later bell housing either. Much fabrication would be needed. I have located a 1932 Dodge 6 cyl motor and it DOES fit. Guest De Soto Frank
Better late than never...I think you will have to find a '33 or earlier engine.Chrysler began bringing out its "new" engines in 1933-34, which is probably when the bell-housings changed. The bellhousing/engine blocks stayed the same from 1935 through the end of the flathead era (1954 for Chrysler and De Soto) and 1959 for Dodge and Plymouth.Hope your Dodge transplant goes well !
