1940 180 Volt Regulator

I would like to know what the correct Voltage Regulator is for a 1940 Super 8 with factory air and overdrive. Did they use a different one if the car had more electric accessories, or were they all the same?

Is it okay to use a Volt Regulator from a different year. I am not interested in authenticity, I just want it to run correctly.

Thanks.

I couldn't find any data on that regulator, but I would think that any V-reg that is positive ground and has the same mounting hole pattern should work. I've found that regulators designed to work with different generators always have a different mounting hole pattern. I doubt the extra accessories would change the V-reg, since they would only effect how often the battery needs charging. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

When testing a V-reg or generator I always mount an amp-meter directly in the wire between generator to V-reg. That way it's much easyer to quickly tell what they are doing.

The regulator for the 180 is different than the 120 and others in that it has an extra set of contacts for grounding of the starter solenoid relay circuit (unless someone has altered the circuit).

If the original regulator is on the car it will be a VRP-4003A or a VRP-4202A-1 and have 4 terminals not 3.

The generator was the same 35 amp unit (GEA-4802-A) for the 160 and 180 models.

If you have a 3 terminal regulator do you have 2 wires on the A terminal of the regulator (one to the generator and one to the starter solenoid relay)?

I'm mainly wondering what the correct I.D. number is supposed to be. The one I took off, if I remember correctly, was 4202A-1, but I wasn't sure if that was correct. On my shelf, I have a 4002 and I'm hoping that will work. If the 4202A-1 is correct, I'll just put that cover on the replacement.

Thanks for your help.

The VRP-4002A is used on the 40 jr cars and the VRP-4002C is used on all 41 to 47 cars. Both the A and the C are three terminal. On the 41 160/180 the solenoid relay wire goes to the A terminal of regulator.
