Packard8
The recent dual quad thread and the pix posted bring up another question. Which plug wire separators are correct for which year? The 1955 dual quad setup Carbking posted shows the short open top style, my ?56 Carib has the longer thread-thru style with the round rubber insulators/holders. However, I have a ?55 Pat with the original engine (numbers matching) that has the longer version like the ?56. Was the change perhaps a ?running change? that spanned both years?
Guest imported_Packards1
You need the wider ones. They help prevent crossfire. And yes they have been fitted on a lot of 55's. My all original 56 400 had the small ones and I had problems until I installed the later type units. Joel
Packard8
Hi Joel,Yes, I agree that the "wide" style is more functional, besides looking much "cooler" IMHO. I was mostly curious as to which style is correct for which year. Thanks,John
Bill Kennedy
OK, I'm confused. Are the ones on my car the wider ones? (See attachment). This car is 5587-3322 so I'm guessing is was made in the summer of 1955.
Guest imported_Speedster
No, that is the narrow configuration. I have never had problems with narrow type bracket (on '56 Clipper), since I replaced the plug wires when I got the car. Here's the wide type on a '56 Executive: See Attachment (The blue bracket with large grommets, below air cleaner)
Guest imported_Speedster
It's my understanding that only '56 Seniors (including Executive) used the large bracket and '56 Clippers had the smaller one, like '55s.
Guest imported_Packards1
Not so, my all original one owner 56 400 had the narrow ones from the factory. I believe there was a service bulletin out on this issue. Joel
Guest Randy Berger
The wide bracket was introduced in Vol 30 No. 3 of the Service Counselors (March 1956). It was recommended as a remedy if a cross-wire ignition problem was observed. The brackets were never mentioned as being for Seniors or Juniors, but only as a replacement for the cross-wire problem.YFAM, Randy Berger
Guest imported_Speedster
Thanks for the Info. I knew if I made a statement, one way or the other, someone would come forward with the Info we needed. (They just love to correct me)

But like I said, I think the wide ones are sexier!
Guest Randy Berger
Yeah, I like them better myself and have them on the 400. I have seen them chromed on some Caribbeans but assumed the owners or dealers did that, not the factory.Hey Rick, it's not a matter of correcting you, just getting the facts straight YFAM, Randy Berger
Guest imported_Speedster
I wouldn't want it any other way. It's just that it seems we sometimes have to Drag the Good Data out of you guys or maybe it's that we don't wait long enough for someone to get their brain wrapped around the question?
Bill Kennedy
These do look very nice--now if I can only find a set somewhere!!!
Packard8
Yep, could be a dealer installed chrome piece to sex up the showroom appeal. Also, as opposed to today?s ?Just In Time? parts delivery to the production line, I think Packard employed the ?Just In Stock? system during the last days.
WCraigH
My 55 Pat has the "wide" wire looms and I have another set off my 56 Exec parts car for my Panther:Wide plug wire holders My question is: anyone know where to get the rubber grommets or does some "standard" grommet fit?
Guest imported_Packards1
The chrome units you are talking about were not factory. Bob Berg many years ago reproduced these items and had them chromed because they looked better. I have a set I bought from him about 20 years ago. I decided to put the black original painted ones on my 56. Joel
Packard8
I think I recall seeing the same or similar grommets on some 50's GM cars too....maybe Cad & Buick. You might check with Steele Rubber Products.
joe kastellic
Are the wide seperators still avaiable thanks Joe
Packard8
Hi Joe,You might contact someone with parts cars like Mike Dulinski...I think his email is packsler@aol.com (???) or watch ebay for a set.
Guest Randy Berger
The rubber grommets in good condition are the key. Mine were NOS and in great shape. I looked in Steele's catalog, but there is not enough of a description to identify them. Maybe if I emailed him with a picture and dimensions they could respond. I'll take a pic today.YFAM, Randy Berger
joe kastellic
Brain, what are the dates for Perrysburg this year? I hope I can make it this year. Joe
Mr.Pushbutton
Joe, I'm not Brian, But Perrysburg is May 13-15. Come on over, we would like to see you there. It's at the Holiday Inn off I-75 @ the Perrysburg exit. John
Guest imported_PackardV8
The critical issue on wire seperation, regardless of hangers, is to be sure that #5 and #7 plug wires do not run parallel to each other by any less than 1/2 inch nor cross each other an odd number of times. If they must cross then be sure that they cross an Even number of times and each successive cross is the opposite direction. Otherwise a slight symptomatic miss will be experienced. This is true for all engines firing 18436572.
