Hello All,

I just bought this car from a friend. He did not have papers for it. The body and Tin are in great shape. But it does need a lot of interior and glass work has flat head 6. He told me is a 1936 I do not know where to look for VIN number But found a Seriel number plate inside door # 3801202 There is also a Tag inside engine compartment with # DU10212TS on it. If these numbers mean anything to anyone I would Greatly appreciate any info. I want to make sure Iam buying parts for right Year!

Edit,

After looking around the boards, I looked there is no frame number. The Engine has a number though on the Left side on a raised block. Engine Number is DU48590. Also has what looks like was a cloth roof at one time (just a hole now). I would just like to make sure I register it as proper year <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Thanks Again

Thank You

Ray,

It appears your car is in fact a '35. The '35 series 'DU' started with S/N 3,756,501 and ended with 3,913,106. Your car S/N 3,801,202 appears to be somewhere in the middle of the year. I hope this helps.

The serial number you found, 3801202, is the VIN. This number is actually for a 1935 Dodge model DU as it falls within the 1935 serial number range 3756501 to 3913106. By the serial numbers, 156,606 model DU cars were built at the Hamtramck (Dodge Main) plant. Yours is the 44,702nd DU car built for the 1935 model year.

The other number you found, DU10212TS, is the body number. The "DU" is for the model number, the "TS" I believe is for "touring sedan" (a sedan with a trunk) while the actual body number is 10212. Not sure where Chrysler started their body numbers in those (Chrysler Canada started at #1), but if Chrysler started at 101 it is the 10,112th touring sedan built. Dodge built a total of 74,203 DU touring sedans which includes production at Hamtramck and Windsor.

The engine number, DU48590, is for a 1935 model DU and is the 47,590th DU engine built.

The hole in the roof is due to the fact auto makers did not have stamping machines big enough to produce a one piece roof. As a result they had a large hold that was filled in with a wooden frame topped with a rubberzed fabric to make it waterproof. Some auto manufacturers used the chicken wire under the top fabric for a radio antenna.

If you want more information on your car, you can get a copy of the build record from DaimlerChrysler Historical in Auburn Hills, MI. I believe they cost $45 US now. The record shows when the car was built, the engine number, body colour, interior trim, any options on the vehicle, etc. Also the dealer that ordered the car.

I believe the serial number is also stamped on the right front frame channel, while the engine number is stamped on the chassis frame by the front hanger for the left rear spring.
