Guest dave327
I have a good pair of 1955 cylinder head castings (no valves). I need one good 56 head and would trade the pair for one head.

Guest
Greetings, Dave,Just so we would recognize them, what are the differences between the 1955 heads and the 1956s?thnx, jv.
Guest dave327
I believe that the best way to tell is to look at the casting number on the top of the center exhaust ports. All of my 55's have 440689 and all of my 56's have 6480406CD. That's probably the easiest way to tell and it requires no disassembly. The 56 heads have a late 55 through mid 1956 casting date, which is located in the top right hand corner under the valve cover. The valves are interchangeable. The major difference in the two is in the combustion chamber design. The 55's are significantly larger and the 56's have a more modern looking 'closed' design to boost the compression rating on the 56 engines.I'm curious to know if there is anyone who has a V8 Packard head that has a different casting number as these are the only ones I've seen so far.
