I am in the process of refitting the pan on my 72 after removing all the sludge

there is a srip of felt and a metal cover that bolts up to the pan on the gearbox end

what is its purpose    some sort of seal???IMG_0117.JPG.5fa9ff7d35f9a162d6ef8008957de4ab.JPG

As you said the seal is fitted between the pan and the flywheel housing and I guess it there to keep dust and dirt out of the flywheel housing as there is a gap between the lower half of the flywheel housing and the big end where the seal is fitted.
