1939 starter question.

Recommended Posts

Have a Chrysler Royal with a sticky starter. Having issues finding another for a spare while I rebuild the other.  What other year starter will fit ?  The one that is in there now looks to be the transistion from foot switch to push button and needs a good cleaning and going over as it will not actuate unless manually done with a screwdriver where it will then spin freely for a week

Sorry to be late to the party, I just got here -- but this is a topic that is near and dear to my heart, having just swapped the starter in my own 1939 (C22 Royal Windsor) and having a parts book at hand.

First, what year Royal?  My 1936-42 parts book shows several different starters for the Royal depending on the year.

Starter # 682273 (the one from my car) was used on 1936 C8 (8-cyl Airstream?), 1938 C18 Royal, 1939 C22 Royal / Windsor and C24 7-passenger sedan / limo (also C23 Imperial/Saratoga/New Yorker but only with Fluid Drive), and 1940 C25 Royal / Windsor and C27 Custom Imperial (also C26 Traveler/New Yorker/Saratoga but only with fluid drive).  Fingers crossed this is the one you have, that seems like a wide net.

1937 C16 Royal used starter # 655529, which was shared with 1937 C14 (Imperial?) and nothing else in this book.  Fingers crossed this is NOT the one you have.

1941 C28 Royal used starter # 952440, which was shared with 1941 C30 Saratoga/New Yorker and C33 Imperial.

1942 C34 Royal used starter # 868857, which was shared with 1942 C36 Saratoga/New Yorker and C37 Imperial as well as 1946-48 C38 Royal/Windsor/Town & Country, C39 New Yorker/Saratoga/Town & Country, and C40 Crown Imperial.

Hope this helps!

Chrysler used starter part # 682273 on:

1936 C8 (8-cyl Airstream?)

1938 C18 Royal

1939 C22 Royal / Windsor and C24 7-passenger sedan / limo (also C23 Imperial/Saratoga/New Yorker but only with Fluid Drive)

1940 C25 Royal / Windsor and C27 Custom Imperial (also C26 Traveler/New Yorker/Saratoga but only with Fluid Drive)

If anyone on the forum has a 1936-42 Dodge or Plymouth parts book maybe they could look up that part number and let us know the applications?
