1956 olds oil bath breather-does it come apart inside?

I have been tryin' to take apart the oil bath breather on my '56 holiday and have removed the insert that sits down in the oil and I would like to be able to get to the filter part inside the insert cuz it's really scuzzy lookin' and I've tried prying gently on it but no luck-I can't imagine they would build it such that you could't clean it(the wire mesh screen filter part).It is a heavy duty oil bath type and not a bat wing type.Any ideas-thanks ps...is the proper color for it grey or black?
