Fuel Starvation

Ok, I just had the carb rebuilt and tuned her up. I had her out a couple of times since then and she ran great. Today I had her oil changed (I have a local shop do it cause getting rid of the old oil is a pain in the a**) and I leave the place, head out down the road. I get up to about 60 and the motor cuts out completely. I let off the gas and she starts running again (kinda like it choked out). I figure I was getting pretty low on fuel, so I pull into a station and fill 'er up. Didn't solve the problem. frown.gif
I can cruise around town and she runs like a top. If I get up to 45 or 50 of it I'm climbing a steep hill, the motor cuts out. At first I'm thinking fuel filter (which I'm going to change as soon as the parts store opens again on Monday). But I would think if it were, it would die at any speed.
This ever happen to anyone? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions before I start replacing the usual suspects (fuel filter, fuel pump,...etc.)?
------------------
1962 LeSabre
Visit my 1962 Buick Site "Advanced Thrust"
[This message has been edited by onebadassbuick (edited 03-31-2001).]

I'm by far no expert, but have had my dealins with my carb, still am actually.
Sounds like, or logic would say it's the fuel pump going bad. Around town you don't empty the bowl to fast but higher speeds the bowl needs to be filled faster, higher speed, faster usage.
Just my logics 2cents worth.
Scott
Bob, I can name that tune in 1 note. hah
Stellar!
Another ideas in addition, add a clear inline filter before the carb, that way you know whats going on at a glance.
Just another thought.
Scott
I'll see if I can locate one somewhere other than my normal parts store (closes at 1 pm Sat. until Mon. am) Could the float setting have changed since I installed the rebuilt carb a couple of months ago, because the problem just started today.
I suspect it may be the filter 'cause now that I think about it, I was low on fuel and maybe the pump sucked up a piece of something that may have collected in the bottom of the tank in the last 40 years.

------------------
1962 LeSabre
Visit my 1962 Buick Site "Advanced Thrust"

if it happened after a few months i would say that its rare that the float is the problem (i thought that the carb was just put on). check filter, pump output and poss. screen on inlet tube (in the tank).

I had a fuel pump give out one time. It ran fine until the car had less than half a tank. When I topped it off it ran fine. Eventually it didn't run at all but I thought it was crazy how it took a while to quit altogether

Think the fuel filter being half filled w/ crud might have something to do with it? rolleyes.gif
Problem solved!! Changed the fuel filter and she runs like a dream. cool.gif The thing was so dirty I didn't even realize it was once clear.
Many thanks for the suggestions and help guys!! smile.gif
------------------
1962 LeSabre
Visit my 1962 Buick Site "Advanced Thrust"

The only time I had a fuel pump go out was in my '68 Chevy P/U. I was cruisin' about 60 and the engine just shut down. It went all at once. I'm amazed about the stories I hear about them going out gradually. I didn't know they could do that.
------------------
1962 LeSabre
Visit my 1962 Buick Site "Advanced Thrust"
