Jyrki
My 46 Roadie is undergoing a frame-off resto. It's seen 90k miles in N.Y. USA, and didn't run well when I bought it. At least a vacuum leak is evident. However now would be a perfect time to open the 320 mill and see what it needs. So I'm asking from you with more experience where to look for wear? 90 grand is not that much, but they do have cold winters in N.Y. state, right? What can I expect from an 90,000 mile engine? Also any tips on buildup greatly appreciated
Jyrki
Finland
The Old Guy
I would check the bores ,and if they are round within .002 and have no more than .005 taper ,I would put in new rings, grind the valves, replace the timing chain and gears, pull enough shims to bring the rod and main bearings into spec ,and drive it another 90K
Guest
Don't even mess with it, just send the whole car to me.
Just use your eyes and your hands. Look for scoring on the crank and the cylinder bores. Feel for a ridge in the bores at the top of the cylinder travel. You can feel a ridge of .003 or more with your fingers.

Tomsriv
71 Riv
Guest
I'd listen to what The Old Guy has to say...He's forgotten more than most of us will ever learn about these engines, and I spent a lot of time sitting in the parking lots at National & Regional meets in the wee hours of the morning with my mouth shut & my ears open trying to absorb as much information as possible. He helped me with a lot of advice when I rebuilt my '51 straight 8 several years ago. Good luck!!!!!
Mike Book BCA # 9202
Reatta Club # 407
BDE #
Jyrki
Thanks for advice. I quess I'd better open it first, take the measures, and purchase the necessary parts. I quess the major suppliers, Bob's, CARS, Buick Specialists, all have quality parts? Egge never replied to my request. By the way, I found a brand new Stromberg AAV-267 (a replacement for 1942-47 60-70-90 series AAV-26) at a local spare part store, for $160. I bought it, and there's one left. Guest
I've been using Buick Specialists for parts for my '51 for a long time & have always been satisfied with the quality. I hope you keep us posted on your progress, and please feel free to e-mail me at AULMike@aol.com if I can be any help in locating or checking out parts, or anything else.
Mike Book BCA # 9202
Reatta Club # 407
BDE #
Jyrki
Anyone ever converted the babbitted rod or crank journals to accept bearing shells available from Buick Specialist & others?
The Old Guy
If all the shims have been removed from your rods and mains , the machining of the rods is a fairly easy remedy. I am not sure about the mains ,as I have never had to replace any.An engine with 90K should be able to have shims removed unless it has not had the oil changed regularly
