Curti Posted June 11, 2014 Share Posted June 11, 2014 The Avanti was parked for a couple of months with a full tank of gas. Upon starting the car it smoked profusely and would hardly run. It turned out the crankcase was full of gasoline. After replacing the oil and siphoning some gas out of the tank, the car runs just fine. Avanti's have the gas tank higher than the fuel pump, does this mean the fuel pump is bad, or is there a defective check valve ? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
unimogjohn Posted June 11, 2014 Share Posted June 11, 2014 (edited) Curt, the fuel pump is bad. The diaphragm has ruptured and allowed fuel into the oil. A common problem with any car that has a mechanical fuel pump. The Studebaker Avanti vendors have ethanol resistance that you can use to rebuild your own pump, or they have new pumps to replace your old one. I just bought one from Dave "Tbow". The kit is about $50 and a new pump is about $180.
