1926 Buick Standard Differential Cover Installation

I removed the cover off my 1926 Standard Buick rear end and when I went to reinstall it, I find it can go two ways. One puts the filler plug above center and the other puts it below center. Which way is correct? It can make a big difference in how much fluid is put into the rear end.

Fred, I don't own a '26 Buick, but I've never seen a rear end cover with the filler plug up on top end. I'm sure it goes towards the bottom. Otherwise, the grease would be so high, it would flow into the axles and out through the axle seals into the brakes.

Thanks for the information. My son had that very same thought about the fluid running out of the axles if I put it at the top. We checked a couple of '28 Chevy differentials we have and found one of each. But who knows how many times those covers have been off and put back on without giving it a thought. Unless I hear differently, I think I'm going to go with your way of thinking. Thanks again.
