How to remove glove box lock

I cannot figure out how to remove the lock from my 35 Pontiac glove box door. The sliding lock bar has to come out of the assembly body and I can't figure out how to release it. The bar has a small spring steel piece that thought would flex and release the lock bar from the internals. No luck. I've tried every way I can imagine to release the bar but it just won't happen. I'm sure that the solution is simple and ingenious, I just cannot figure it out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
