smoking engine

just aquired a 69 electra 225 conv 430, engine runs ok but is smoking, grey or white.<BR>running a little rough. any suggestions, do i need a complete rebuild.<BR>pleasse help shocked.gif" border="0

You probably lost a head gasket. Did you overheat the car recently? If you did,you might want to have the heads magnifluxed while they are off ,as you might have cracked one. if the engine was running good before this happened, the rest of the engine should be fine.

Is it using coolant? Is their oil in the coolant? Is the oil milky colored? These are sure signs of coolant leaks to the engine.<P>Bad rings can cause smoke...<BR>To do a quick check on rings take the oil fill cap off when it is running and feel for air coming out of the hole. If it blows air at your hand it means the rings are bad. <P>Valve stem seals are another possible culprit. Bad valve guides will do it too.
