Guest 48Ragtop
Can anyone tell me what wheel bearing grease is appropriate for my 1948 Cadillac. A GM service bulletin I have says to use G12 Wheel Bearing Lubricant. Is that still available? Are new wheel bearing greases compatible with the older products? Also, what about chassis lube. Are there any compatibility issues - old with new products?Appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks, 48Ragtop
Owen_Dyneto
Modern wheel bearing greases are designed for the higher temperature environments of disc brake cars and are far superior to the old-time wheel bearing greases. As to compatibility, they are probably completely compatible but you'd be better served to clean the old bearings (with kersone, NOT gasoline), and repack them. This would also give you the opportunity to inspect the bearings and races.I wouldn't be concerned about incompatibility with chassis greases, but would recommend that you use a recognizeable name-brand like Valvoline, Mobil, etc.
