1930 chevrolet, gas sending unit

So the Filling Station d/n have the fuel sending unit for the '30. I was told "the base" is a different diameter than subsequent years. My fuel sending unit was completely rusted apart inside the tank. So all I can think to do is to just put the "the cover plate" back on the gas tank and have no level indication.

Any other suggestions? It seems like a long shot to see if a '31 gas tank will show up and fit my car. Then I would still have to buy a new sending unit.
