New Packard Coachwork Ideas

Here's another view. The car is basically a LeBaron Sport Brougham done 4 years earlier and with some interesting differences. The '37 has a somewhat leaner and still wood composite body, and of course that classic 30s grill. Using the 138-CD Touring Sedan as a starting point ($1900, 120 HP, 3850 lb), specs for this car would have been impressive, especially when compared with the Super Eight and Twelve. Styling would have been unique, blending elements of the '34 LeBaron Sport Phaeton into a closed car. And importantly for Packard, the car would have hit the market a year before the 60 Special.

Specs:

138" wheelbase

4200 lbs

180 HP V12

$2300

Many thanks to the owners of the '37 120 Coupe and '37 138-CD upon which this and previous image are based.

Heres a sport sedan concept on the 1938 1608 Twelve chassis. Used the Brunn as base, added overtones of Clipper. Rear pontoons are taller and longer than stock to bring more into proportion with the fronts. Removed the running boards to add a touch of sleekness (got into a '38 some time back and found them to be in the way). All thoughts welcome.

Had posted this idea some time ago at the Packard Info forum. Here it is for those who didn't see it. Clipper with early 40s vertical grill and other frontal mods. Also removal of integrated running boards, which might require shortening of the body mount flanges to move the mounts inboard several inches. Front fenders are shortened several inches to create a more defined pontoon shape. The basic idea for this concept was to offer a more traditional appearence up front and a trimmer midsection. Many thanks to the owner of the '47!

Clipper on 141" wheelbase with front wheels moved forward 7", rear wheels moved rearward 4'' and decklid lengthened same. Hood is lengthened 2". Pontoons stop short of the front doors, running boards were removed. Goal was to stretch the Clipper proportions a bit.

1937 Twelve sport sedan on 1508 chassis and based on 1507 5 pass coupe. Rear doors cut from the coupe's body with 5" or so added to the doors' forward edges, the material taken from touring sedan rear doors or fabricated anew. B-pillar lifted from touring sedan. 5" or so added to roof to connect the coupe's rear roof section to the front. One item that would be nice is a rear mount that articulates so the decklid can open.

Some tinkering with the contour styling. Uses the 200's backlight on the 400 greenhouse. Added 5 inches to the hood for a total wheelbase of 132". Removed the pronounced rear fender bulge, envision a more subtle bulge for front and rear fenders. Side windows like LeBaron Sport Brougham. Body insert between doors removed. Many thanks to the owner of the 51 200 sedan!
