1407 gas tank removal

I have a '36 1407 V-12 5 passenger sedan that has not been run in many years. The gas tank is so full of varnish that the pickup is blocked so I'm trying to remove the tank for cleaning. Has anyone pulled one of these? The filler tube is attached to the tank above the frame so must be removed before the tank can be dropped. The cap screws holding it onto the tank are very hard to access, almost looks like the left fender must be removed to access them. Is there a better way?

I'm assuming its about the same arrangement as 34 and 35 tanks. No better way that I know of. Just close quarters - patience required.
