What a surprise. The speedo works fine and then WHAMMO!

The needle starts to wave till it settles back down.

How can I FIX it?? The odometer is fine. Could it be

wiring? appreciate any suggestions.

Jerry----based on a similar experience with my '89, it is either the speed sensor (top of the transaxle extension housing) or the connector to the speed sensor. You have to be under the car almost directly under the Turbo in order to access the sensor: I used dual floor jacks with stands but ramps will also work. In my case, the turbo oil return hose developed a slight leak ---this is positioned almost directly above the sensor--and fouled up the connector. This caused the speedo to operate as you described. In my case, I replaced the sensor (about $40 from the dealer), cleaned the connector and sealed it with some black Permatex. There have been no problems since---hope this helps.
