1953mack
The number that you list says you have ENGINE NUMBER 192151...NOT 1921515. The "V" prefix designates a V-8 engine and the last digit "5" is the suffix. The prefix + the engine number + the suffix is technically called the Engine Serial Number (E.S.N.).Check to see if the number on your engine matches this number. The engine could have been replaced. There are two places where you can find numbers.....(1) on the engine block deck between cylinders #4 and #6 (middle on driver's side) that would include the "V" and the suffix "5", or (2) on the oil filter boss of the engine WITHOUT the "V" and the suffix "5".I've read articles that say the E.S.N. number was sometimes used as the VIN. You say that this is your VIN. The number stamped on the frame or on a metal body tag, technically known as the Car Serial Number (C.S.N.), was also used for car registration purposes...probably more times than the E.S.N. Here's how Buick numbered their 1953-1956 V-8 engines...- The last digit (suffix) "5" indicates the engine was originally installed in a 50 series Buick SUPER. 1953 Super engines had a 2-barrel carburetor.- If the last digit (suffix) was a "7", that stood for an engine that was originally installed in a 70 Series Buick ROADMASTER or in a 1954 Skylark Model 100.- Likewise, a 1954-1956 Buick SPECIAL 40 Series would have an E.S.N. ending with the suffix "4" and a CENTURY 60 Series would have a "6" suffix.- All 1953 thru 1956 Buick V-8 engines up to engine number 999,999 were stamped on the engine block deck starting with the prefix "V". The prefix "V" was not used on higher engine numbers. I just happen to have a NOS block with fitted pistons WITHOUT a stamped number.....it's blank.- 1953 Buick V-8 engine number range (without the prefix and suffix) was 2001 through 273955.Let us know if you do have a 1953 Buick Super and whether the engine matches your VIN. Good Luck.Al Mack Edited February 14, 2016 by 1953mack (see edit history)
