  1. I'm looking to buy a GOOD rear end assembly, including torque tube, third member, differential, axle housing and radial struts. Need not have wheels, tires, brakes, springs or axle shafts. Must be between 3.4 and 3.7 to one ratio. I'm in Akron Ohio, and will come to pick up within a 200 mile area. Please, no problem parts. Ratio code is stamped in housing underneath differential. Thanks, Jim - bookertee4661@yahoo.com -
  2. Could someone either tell me or direct me to a place where I could find the Rear Axle Ratios used in the various Buick models in the '48 thru '55 style differentials. What I'm looking for in particular is the availability of a ratio between 3.2 and 3.7 , preferably about 3.54 or so. I know this is a post war question, but I felt there was a lot of knowledge of this among pre war enthusiasts. Thanks, Jim

  4. Could someone tell me some information about the side gears and axle shafts on a 48 thru 55 Buick rear axle. I'd like to know the number of splines and the outside diameter of the axles at the spline. I assume this is constant through all the series for the years listed. Could someone verify that also? Thank you.

  6. Sean, Wow, you are a wealth of knowledge on this subject! I'm having trouble with the link to "Big Gears for Any Engine", it appears as though it has been removed. I really need to get ahold of that article and get more educated. Maybe eBay? I also was pleased to see the side by side pictures of your '38 and '57 transmissions. (38-57_trans.JPG) Are there 6 pictures supposed to be there? Only one comes up for me. My "custom" project is actually a Flathead powered '36 Ford in which I intend to install a Buick floor shift and Buick torque tube rear end. Maybe the first time this has ever been done? I want to keep the transmission as short as possible to minimize or eliminate the mods to the frame x member. The smaller 5 bolt tranny should easily handle a mildly modified flathead. Sean, I sure appreciate you taking the time to help me out here. If anyone else has input, PLEASE keep me in mind. Thanks, Bookertee (Jim)
  7. Sean, What I'm trying to do is to come up with a Buick floor shifted transmission for a custom application, but I want to use parts which are not "unique" or horribly expensive, and are also reliable. I thought that if internals of the earlier floor shifted boxes were interchangeable with the later column shifted boxes that there would be a much wider pool of available parts to use for the build and possible future rebuild if necessary. So far, from the info you and others have sent, it looks encouraging. If anyone else has added info please keep it coming. Thanks Sean and thanks to all. (PS this custom application will retain the torque tube output)
  8. Sean, I would greatly appreciate an email with the transmission interchange data. Please send to bookertee4661@yahoo.com Thanks!
  9. Could someone tell me the measurement of the overall width of the '59 and '60 Large Series Rear Axle assembly, measured from outside drum to outside drum? Within 1/2 inch is fine. Thanks, Jim
  10. When Buick introduced the "column shift" to replace the "floor shift" type transmission on the series 40 did they introduce all new internals, that being gearing, shafting etc, or did they simply design a new case that introduced the shifter fork system differently to pretty much the same internal working parts?
  11. Could someone tell me reliably the year in which Buick incorporated synchronizers in 2nd and 3rd gears in their transmissions? Was it the same year regardless of the series, or did the large and small transmissions have different introduction dates?
