  1. Car is going in today to have the transmission looked at. After warming it up, it now goes forward and reverse without bucking. The transmission is slipping a little - but it was doing that before. I'm still not going to drive it. We may just try to change the fluids and look for anything broken, metal shavings, etc. Anyone know what kind of oil goes in the transmission and differential? Its a 1947 Cadillac series 62.
  2. I just posted a similar request in the tech section - sorry for any duplication. The car is in excellent condition inside and out. Everything works but now I can't drive it because of a problem I ran into when towing. I towed it to Connecticut from Virginia (about 300 miles) with the rear wheels trailing. I found out after doing this that the transmission wasn't getting any lubrication. And in fact, it was extremely hot and smoking a little. The car will still go forward and reverse, only there is a jolt after a few feet like a brake is being tapped. I've been told not to drive it to avoid any "additional" transmission damage. Any idea how extensive this problem might be? What parts I might need? Anything unusual about fixing this transmission that a guy from a place like AAMCO would need to know? Unfortunately, I do not have a trunk full of cash to get this done. Your advice is very much appreciated. Thanks, -Anthony.
  3. I recently towed my 1947 Cadillac series 62 convertible about 300 miles. I used a tow dolly to tow it with the front wheels up and rear wheels trailing. I made sure it was in neutral and no parking brake on. Turned out to be a bad idea. Shortly into the trip, a very light mist of fluid was leaking somehwere under the car and it began to smoke, just barely, whenever we stopped. The car starts fine and goes into gears fine but moving forward or back there is a jolt after a few feet like a brake is being applied. I've been told not to drive it to avoid any additional damage to the transmission. Any idea how bad this might be, what parts I might need and where to get them? I'm going to take it to a transmission guy. Is there anything tricky or unusual about this transmission that a mechanic should know about? Not done "learning my lesson" yet. I'm sure it will be a good one. Your advice is very much appreciated. Thanks, -Anthony.
