  1. Thanks Patrick for your information. My 38-Special calls for AC46 plugs.I have installed these they were fouled after about 100 miles. All eight(8) plugs were equally bad. After the plugs foul out I get a back fire through the carb. The carburetor on my buick is a stromberg AVV-1. What plug would be hotter than the AC46? Thanks George

  2. My 1938 special backfires through the carb at about half throttle. It does not backfire on acceleration. It only backfires on a steady half throttle. There is no backfire through the exaust.I think my springs in my carburator are weak but I am not sure.

    Thank You

  3. I recently had my engine in my 1938 buick special rebuilt, including the oil pump. Upon cold start up I have 55lbs oil pressure, once the engine is at normal running temp. the oil pressure at idle is 10 lbs at 40mph I have about 30lbs on the gage.My question is whether the oil pressure I have is ok or do I need to check the gage for accuracy or possibly the oil pump.

    THANK YOU

  4. I have found a 1938 Buick hot water heater with defroster motor atached.I do not have a control for the unit. My question is did these dealer installed options have a single control to operate both heater and defroster or did they install two (2) controls, one for heat and one for defrost?

    THANK YOU

  5. Bill when I took my engine apart there was 3/4 inch of slug in the oil pan, under the valve cover in the push rod area slugged up.I blamed this on non-detergent oil and 70 years of use.

    Thanks for you input George

  6. I have a 1938 Buick special 248ci. I am having the engine rebuilt my guy doing the machine work advises me to have insert bearings installed on the rods instead of having them rebabbited. He has the capability of doing either. He also strongly advises me to install an oil filter on this engine. I plan on driving this car 2000 mi. a year. Should I take his advise?

    Thank You

  7. I need torque values for my 1938 series 40 248ci buick.I need to know values for the head bolts, main bearings, and connecting rods. The 1938 shop manual does not give you these values.

I also would like to know if it is possible to put an oil filter on this engine and is it worth the effort to do this?

If I do not put an oil filter on this engine should I use detergent or non-detergent oil? The engine is being rebuilt so it will start out clean.

    Thank You

    George

  8. I think I have found the engine number. 43527983 is stamped on the right side of the engine. There is no dash (-) as you show in your beginning and ending numbers. If you believe this is my engine number please reply.

    Thank You

    George
