  1. Two years ago, I had my hood completely rebuilt and painted. In the process, most of the orginal fibreglass was replaced including the hood scoops. This car has basically been in a heated garage since and now I find one hairline crack appearing in one corner of each scoop? Has anyone had this problem - I spent a fortune to have this hood "properly" repaired and repainted since it is an original OEM hood and to have this now happen is really frustrating? Prior to having the hood repainted, I never had a crack anywhere on the scoops and now I have two! Any advice would be appreciated. 3. Thanks so much for your quick reply. I am off the check the VIN number.
  4. Is there a component of the 69 442 serial number that identifies it as a 442? Is there any other way to know if the car is an original 442 and not a Cutlass converted to a 442?
  5. JEK - thanks very much for your comments - sounds like I am going to have a weekend project. I will feel better knowing there is some additional reinforcement under this crack. The difficulty is the area in the corner of the scoop is small and confined. Thanks again.
  6. I have just noticed a small hair line crack eminating from the corner of one of my hood scoops. I understand this is a common problem on these fibreglass hoods. Does anyone know of a way to reinforce the fibreglass from underneath so as to help the crack not spread further? Is there a putty or resin compound that could be inserted from underneath in the corner? Thanks
  7. Thanks very much for your help. Much appreciated.
  8. Can anyone confirm to me that on the 1970 to 1972 Olds 442 Ram Air hood, the top stripes are squared off at the ends near the windshield. In other words, the pin stripes do not continue around the end as they do at the front of the scoops?
  9. I have a 1972 Cutlass 442 with the fibreglass ram air hood. The car was painted about 12 years ago and about 6 years ago, the paint on the hood started to bubble. I have the car in a restoration shop now to have the hood repainted. The hood was stripped and primed but before it was painted, the primer has now started to bubble. Under the bubbles appears to be fibreglass, but it is very smooth and oily to feel? Has anyone had a problem painting these hoods? Is there supposed to be some form of seal on the fibreglass before painting? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks
  10. I have a 1972 Olds 442 with the ram air hood. This car was painted about 12 years agao. About 6 years ago, large bubbles started to appear on the hood. I have the car in a restoration shop now to have the hood repainted. The hood has been stripped by hand and now has several coats of primer. Before the hood was painted its final coat, bubbles appeared in the primer. The hood was put in the sun for 24 hours and more bubbles appeared? The hood is an orignal GM hood. When the bubbles are opened, it appears fibreglass is undernerath, but is very smooth and oily to touch? Does anyone have any idea what is happending with this hood???? Thanks
