  1. Thanks Dave, documentation always helps. This tells me my starter is the correct original for the car, but I'm still having a hard time processing why the starter gear would turn clockwise. This would turn the engine counter clockwise. I've never started this engine before, so when I finally got to the point where I could, the starter made a grinding noise. That's when I started looking at the direction the starter gear was turning. There is also some damage to the flywheel teeth in the spot where the starter gear was supposed to engage. Am I missing something?
  2. Dodge DA 6 cyl. The hand crank turns clockwise as does the flywheel. Starter is North East Electric, type 6494. Picture is attached. The starter may be original, but the lever is gone and the cable was cut. Instead, the previous owner installed a solenoid.
  3. Looking at the engine from the front of the car, which direction should the starter gear turn? Clockwise or counterclockwise? I say counterclockwise. I finally took out the starter that was in my 1930 Dodge, got it rebuilt, then discovered that the starter spins clockwise. This starter is not original to the car and now I'm thinking the previous owner (who is long dead) put in this starter without thinking about which way it had to turn in order to spin the flywheel clockwise. Has anyone else had a problem like this, and if so, how did you fix it?
  4. I have a 1930 Dodge DA whose wires were fried before I bought it. I bought a new wiring harness from RI Wire and wired everything up according to the schematic they sent with one exception: I don't have the original starter. It was replaced/modified by the previous owner and instead of having a cable to engage the starter to the flywheel, it has a solenoid. I, believing that electricity is witchcraft, connected the battery (using positive ground) to one side of the solenoid, the other side to the starter, and a 12g wire from the solenoid to the starter button, with a second wire going from the starter button to the ammeter. This does not appear to work. Ok, stop laughing. Rather than trying to play wack-a-mole in trying different connections I figured I would post this and see if someone can point me in the right direction. I'm thinking the wire from solenoid to starter button should actually go to the ammeter, but in my head that means that the starter could be triggered regardless of the status of the key switch, plus, if that's true, what wire goes to the starter button? Everything else under the dash is wired according to the schematic.
