The members on this forum go out of their way to help others solve problems.   I have learned quite a bit just by reading their suggestions.  By the way years ago I worked on my first steering box and bought a 18" crescent wrench  to remove the steering shaft column from the box . I have used it many times since then.   Good Luck.

I have since removed the box from the car and taken the gear and shaft that goes to the Pitman arm out. The steering shaft is what is frozen up. Going to try heat where I think it may be stuck. If not I'll be searching for another box. Thanks for everyone's help.

The 30 chevy box is partially rebuidable but if certain things are worn you might be out of luck. A 31 box is a better replacement and easier to adjust as far as steering and bearing play goes. I just replaced a really bad 30 box out with an excellent condition 31. What a difference.

Thanks, these cars are new to me and I never thought a 31 would even fit on the 30. I have a source if this one doesn't work out.

Move it into your shop with dollies  under the front wheels or a floor jack under the front axle.  You might also have to use scrap wood under them if you are moving on gravel.   When inside your building remove the Pitman arm and you have isolated the steering box.  It should be easy to trouble shoot then.

I have it on dollies now and where I want to park it. The cross shaft seems froze in the box. I will take the pitman arm off this week. I have no idea how these come apart if anyone has done this before please let me know.

  4. Update, turned the bezel where the end of the spring is between tabs and tapped with a rubber hammer slightly. The guy at Shoebox Central says that's how it's done. I guess this car is stubborn because nothing works. I just found out replacements are on back order.

I would also ask on the VCCA site parts wanted.  https://vccachat.org/

I had a real hard time finding these for my cars. I had to move the screw holes on a couple.

Is the door side hinge half still still there and okay?

Also need the width of your hinge and does the other side have a number stamped on the side that would be hidden when attached?

    Dave

The other hinge has 15335  it is 1 3/4 wide or maybe just a 32nd less than 3/4 pretty close tho

Do you know if the front end is the same for '46,47.48? I have a neighbor who has a Desoto coupe in that year range but I can't remember exactly the year. It's a complete car and looks to be in good condition, being garage stored for many years but needs restoration.

Let me know if they are interested in selling it. I need a rear seat as well.

I worked at a Happy Chef as a senior in high school. I still have a menu from there. It was located in the Independence , Missouri area.

  8. I am at a loss in finding a door hinge for my wife's 30 Chevy coupe. The car came missing the pass side center door hinge. I have been looking for over a year so any leads would be appreciated. If you can help or know someone who has these parts let me know. I have already asked Gary Wallace
