  1. I put a washer under the outside mounting screw of the pin on the softtop  to change angle of intersection and it is engaging now. Now I need to install new plastic housing on pulldown motor and make sure it works. Fun never ceases. Still chasing isue on third brake light. Have power to light strip, so going to drill out mounting rivets, clean connections and see if that fixes issue.

  2. My car was originally bought in Texas, moved to Arizona and garage kept for 25+ years, hardtop never off.  Previous owner (a trucker) bought and transported to PA, never took the top off.  Had it about 2 months, when we got a snowstorm, 3+ ft of snow.  Came home from trucking run, his wife met him at the door, said sell your cars (he also had a very nice VW convertible), we are moving to Florida!

He had his daughter  list it on Craigslist.  I saw it, was interested, test drove it, bought it.  In June (snow finally gone) took top off for first time in 25+ years.  Soft top just like this, great condition.  Unfortunately, material had hardened, now has some minor cracks, splits on fold lines.  I failed to use top dresssing immediately and sun did its thing.

Lesson, get and use some top dressing immediately to soften the outer layer before you have the same problems.

  3. I decided to try some double backed tape to adhere to the fabric to the glass.  I did a little research, got Gorilla Tape, Double Sided, Weatherproof, 30 lb test.  Seems to work, I tested it today at the car wash with a high pressure spray and it help well.  Moves well with the window when I put the top up or down.  Have to see how it holds up over the summer heat.

  4. This is the place where when I drop the top, the glass folds away from the top.  When I first bought the car 3 years ago, the fabric would seal to the glass when I put the top up, don't know if it was a residue on the fabric, static cling, etc.  Just that it stopped doing that.  I can't glue to fabric to the glass, as that would prevent the top from folding and could not drop it.

  5. I am having problems with my '90 TC convertible top.  The lower fabric 'rubber strip' on the outside bottom no longer seals against the rear window glass, allowing water to build up along the rear window.  It doesn't leak into the storage area, but unless it dries out, when I put the top down, the water splashes into the rear compartment.

What can I do to restore the 'sticky' to the fabric rubber strip to keep the water from building up along the bottom of the convertible top?

    Thanks,

  6. Good afternoon,

I need on of the levers.  I also need 2 wheel center caps (my very nice ones somehow came up missing after I had the front half axles replaced).  I also could use passenger door outer rubber molding, mine has small tear in it.

I use paypal so just send me invoice so I can pay for the lever.  For anyone, please send price if you have any of the other items.

    Thanks,

    Jim

  7. Found a local transmission shop whose owner, while not familiar with the TC, was very familiar with the transmission.  Took it to him, he test drove (really likes the car), services transmission, inspected everything.  He found and fixed a leaking axle seal, declared all well.  Problem solved, now more responsive, no problems.  And only about $300 total.  I'm happy.

  8. I called Firestone and Midas to schedule a transmission service.  Neither would do it, apparently fearing that in the course of servicing transmission and changing the filter, it is possible it would adversely affect the shifting, making the car undriveable.  I then scheduled an inspection at a local transmission specialty shop that has loads of experience with A604 transmissions.  He test drove, says runs well, thinks a transmission service and filter change will 'cure' the problem.  Note that the day of the test drive it was in low 60's.  I bought the car 3 years ago without service records.  He thinks just old fluid and filter.  Scheduled for next Friday, Apr 19.  Will update.

  9. I have a 1990 TC V6, with 4 speed AT.  Recently I have a problem that when I back out of my driveway, I shift into either Drive or Overdrive, the transmission does not immediately engage.  I have to sit for a bit, let idle, before the transmission will engage.  Often, I will have hesitation at several stops before this hesitation ceases.  I suspected fluid levels, checked, added fluid, have driven it probably 100+ miles since then, problem recurs.  Seems to be worse in colder weather.

    Thoughts please?

    Jim
